How to Add Bots (Apps) to Your Discord Server

Discord provides various features like creating events, forums, voice channels, etc. But what if you want to play trivia with your Discord friends? or send a welcome message when anyone joins your server? Discord does not have such features by default. This is where the bots come in (now they call them Apps). You can add bots/apps to improve your Discord server functionality.

For example,

  • Truth or Dare bot lets you play Truth or Dare, Would You Rather, or Never Have I Ever games on your server.
  • MEE6 bot provides moderation controls, reaction roles, a role-leveling system, and YouTube alerts.
  • SoundCloud bot helps to play music from your SoundCloud library.

But how to find and add bots? There are multiple ways to do it, let’s start with the native option.

Note: To add bots to your server, you must have Manage Server permission on that server. If not, you need to enable the permission or contact the moderator or admin to do that.

1. Add Bots from the Discord App Directory

App Directory is Discord’s native app store. It provides the easiest option to find and add bots to your Discord server.

1. Open the Discord server to which you want to add bots. Click on the server name at the top-right corner and select the App Directory option from the menu.

2. On the App Directory page, you can find bots under various categories. You can also search for any specific bot. Click on the bot that you want to install.

3. On the app page, click on Add app button in the top-right corner.

4. Select the desired server in the pop-up, and click on Continue, and then on Authorize.

Some apps can also be installed to your Discord account completely, if that’s the case, click on the Add to Server option and then select the server. The process is the same on the Discord app for Android and iPhone.

2. Invite Bots from the Third-Party App Libraries

Though Discord has a native app store, it does not host all the apps/bots in it. If you prefer to explore more bots or install a specific bot, you can check out third-party bot stores.

Some of the popular Discord app stores are:

1. Hop on to those third-party stores, explore the bots, or search for the required bot. I will use top.gg as an example here.

2. Click on the bot you want to add to your server and then click on the Invite button.

3. On the next page, select the server you want to invite the bot.

4. Finally Authenticate the bot to grant the required permissions.

The bot will be invited and you can access it on your Discord server. Also, the process is similar on the Discord mobile apps or when using any third-party Discord bot libraries.

Remove Discord Bots from the Server

If the bot isn’t working as expected or you don’t need it anymore, you can remove the bot from the member list in the left sidebar. Right-click on the bot, give feedback (if any) in the pop-up, and click the Kick button to remove it instantly.

Before you tinker with bots, remember that many lock their features behind a paywall. Also, bots need to access data on your server to work, which can raise privacy concerns if you tend to host private data on the server.
