When we first meet Ryohei Arisu (Kento Yamazaki), he’s a directionless gamer spending his days with his two best friends, Karube and Chota. Their lazy afternoon in Tokyo turns into a nightmare when a sudden flash leaves the city deserted, throwing them into the mysterious Borderlands.

Survival depends on playing deadly games linked to playing cards. Lose, or let your visa expire, and a laser from the sky kills you instantly.

Arisu’s introduction to this twisted reality is brutal. After surviving an early ordeal known as “Dead or Alive,” his group learns how the card suits define the challenges: clubs demand teamwork, hearts involve betrayal, spades test physical ability, and diamonds focus on intelligence.

Survival comes at a price. When confronted with the Seven of Hearts, Karube and Chota sacrifice themselves to save Arisu. This devastating loss haunts him throughout the series.

Soon thereafter, Arisu meets Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya), a skilled mountaineer. With her, he goes to “The Beach,” a supposed safe haven run by the eccentric Hatter. The community members spend all their time trying to gather all the cards from the deck because they assume it holds the route back home.

Paradise doesn’t last forever, as Hatter gets murdered. This shift puts power in the hands of the ruthless Aguni, turning the resort into the stage for the infamous Witch Hunt game. Arisu solves the mystery and reveals that Momoka staged her own murder, while her companion Asahi secretly assisted the gamemasters.

The season ends with a shocking reveal: Mira, one of Hatter’s closest allies, appears on screen to congratulate the survivors. Zeppelins hover above, displaying face cards on them, and foreshadowing an even deadlier stage to come.

Season 2 wastes no time throwing you into chaos. Arisu, Usagi, Kuina, and Chishiya are immediately hunted by the King of Spades, a mercenary whose game breaks all rules. He can attack anytime, anywhere, making him a constant threat. While the King dominates the season, other face card challenges also push each character to their limits.

The King of Clubs’ “Osmosis” involves a point-based competition between Arisu’s group and Kyuma’s group. Despite their best efforts, it’s Tatta’s heartbreaking self-sacrifice that secures victory. Chishiya goes solo, facing psychological traps in the Jack of Hearts deception game and the King of Diamonds’ math-based challenge.

Every victory reveals an uglier truth: the face-card ‘bosses’ are former players, which adds a terrifying edge to life in the Borderland.

Meanwhile, Usagi and Arisu face the Queen of Spades in “Checkmate,” a deadly twist on tag where loyalty is tested across sixteen rounds. With Usagi’s leadership, they rally enough players to claim victory. All roads eventually lead to the Queen of Hearts, Mira.

In one of the most manipulative games yet, she forces Arisu into a match of croquet while psychologically tormenting him with illusions. Nearly broken, Arisu regains his resolve thanks to Usagi, defeats Mira, and clears the final card.

When the face cards are completed, the survivors are presented with an option: remain as citizens of the Borderlands or go back to the real world. Most opt for home.

And here comes the plot twist: a meteor strike devastated Tokyo, and all those who entered the Borderlands were caught between death and life. For Arisu, his heart stopped for a full minute before reviving. The Borderlands, therefore, became a kind of purgatory where survival was tested.

“Arisu wakes up in a hospital with other survivors, none of whom remember their shared experiences. Nevertheless, fate pulls him back toward Usagi, indicating their connection reaches beyond the Borderland. Just when it seems over, a Joker card on the table teases that the Borderland games are far from finished.

Here’s the big question: what does the Joker card represent? While the face and number cards were played, the Joker wasn’t, and therefore left room for imagination. Is it the real master of the Borderlands, proof that the games never end, or a hint that survival wasn’t permanent?

With season 3 confirmed to go beyond the manga’s ending, the Joker could become the foundation for brand-new rules, mysteries, and challenges. For Arisu and Usagi, survival during their stay in Tokyo may be short-lived if the Borderlands come calling once again.

Alice in Borderland season 3 will premiere exclusively on Netflix on September 25, 2025. Don’t press play until you’ve caught up on every brutal twist, shocking death, and haunting mystery that brought us here, because the Joker’s game might be the deadliest one yet.
