If there's one activity I always make time for while exploring the Caribbean, it's capturing Forts. They might look intimidating at first, especially if you're sailing around with an underpowered Jackdaw, but they're easily one of the most rewarding side activities in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced. Besides making the seas safer, Forts unlock fast travel points, reveal hidden locations, and open up new opportunities for your fleet. In this guide, I'll show you every Fort location in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, explain how Forts work, and help you decide which ones are worth conquering first.

What Are Forts?

Forts are heavily defended military strongholds controlled by either the Spanish or British forces. Each Fort protects a specific region of the Caribbean, making them one of the toughest naval activities you'll encounter. Unlike Naval Contracts, where you simply complete a mission and collect your reward, Forts combine large-scale naval combat with on-foot combat. First, you'll bombard the Fort using the Jackdaw before leading Edward and his crew inside to capture it.

Personally, I think Forts are some of the most satisfying side activities in the game because every successful capture permanently changes the world. Once you liberate a Fort, it stays under pirate control for the rest of your playthrough.

If you're planning to complete every activity in the game, don't forget to check out our Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced Wiki, where you'll find guides for contracts, collectibles, equipment, progression, and much more.

Why Should You Capture Forts?

At first, Forts might seem like optional challenges in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced that you can safely ignore. However, I'd strongly recommend clearing them whenever your Jackdaw is powerful enough.

First, capturing a Fort removes the fog of war from the surrounding region. Instead of sailing around blindly, you'll instantly discover nearby islands, harpooning locations, diving spots, smuggler's caves, legendary ships, and other important points of interest. Additionally, every captured Fort becomes a Fast Travel location, making it much easier to move around the Caribbean.

Perhaps the biggest benefit is unlocking new Fleet Missions in Black Flag Resynced. These missions continue generating extra Reales and valuable resources, which you'll eventually need for expensive Jackdaw Ship Upgrades and Crafting Upgrades.

Finally, conquering Forts in Black Flag Resynced also makes the surrounding waters safer by removing enemy control from the region. That means you'll spend less time dealing with hostile patrol ships while exploring.

Fort Difficulty Explained

Every Fort has a difficulty rating in AC Black Flag Resynced that tells you how challenging the siege will be.

  • 💀 Easy - Great for early-game players. These Forts have fewer defenses and weaker cannons.
  • 💀💀 Medium - You'll want a few Jackdaw Ship Upgrades before attempting these.
  • 💀💀💀 Hard - These Forts are designed for the late game and can quickly sink an underpowered ship.

From my experience, I wouldn't even think about attacking the three-skull Forts until you've upgraded the Jackdaw's armor, cannons, and mortar. Otherwise, the Fort's defenses can tear through your ship before you even get close.

If you're still collecting the resources needed for those upgrades, our Materials and Trade Goods guide can help you gather everything much faster.

Story-Related Fort

Not every Fort can be captured whenever you want.

The Punta Guarico Fort in Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced is tied directly to the main story, so you won't be able to liberate it until you reach the appropriate mission.

Meanwhile, every other Fort can be tackled whenever you feel ready. Once you capture one, it permanently changes from a red castle icon to a gold castle icon, showing that the region is now under pirate control.

How to Conquer a Fort

Capturing a Fort in Black Flag Resynced isn't as simple as sailing in and firing a few cannonballs. Every siege plays out in two distinct phases, and you'll need to survive both if you want to claim the region for the pirates.

Before you set sail, I'd highly recommend investing in a few Jackdaw Ship Upgrades. Better armor, stronger cannons, and an upgraded Mortar make a huge difference, especially against the tougher two-skull and three-skull Forts. If you're still gathering resources, our Materials and Trade Goods guide can help you collect everything you need much faster.

Phase One: Destroy the Fort's Defenses

The first phase is all about naval combat. Your objective is to destroy every defensive section protecting the Fort before you can launch a ground assault.

Each tower, wall, and cannon battery has its own health bar. Once you destroy a section, it stops firing permanently during that battle, making it much safer to move around the Fort.

As the difficulty increases, Forts gain stronger defenses in AC Black Flag Resynced, more cannons, and heavier mortar fire. Because of that, I wouldn't rush into higher-level Forts unless your Jackdaw is properly upgraded.

Use Your Mortar First

If you've unlocked the Mortar, make it your opening attack.

Since the Fort never moves, landing mortar shots is surprisingly easy. A well-placed barrage can remove a large chunk of a defensive tower's health, or even destroy weaker sections outright if you've upgraded the weapon.

After firing the Mortar, close the distance and finish damaged defenses with your broadside cannons.

Keep the Jackdaw Moving

One mistake I made early on was slowing down to line up perfect shots. Unfortunately, that gives the Fort plenty of time to bombard you with its own cannons and Mortars. Instead, keep sailing around the Fort while firing broadsides whenever you have a clear angle.

Whenever you see glowing orange circles appear in the water, steer away immediately. Those markers show where enemy Mortars will land, and taking multiple hits can destroy the Jackdaw surprisingly quickly in Black Flag Resynced.

If you can't avoid an incoming volley, don't forget to Brace. Reducing damage is much better than trying to tank every cannonball.

Watch Out for Enemy Ships

The Fort isn't your only problem. Hostile ships often sail into the battle, and they'll attack as soon as they spot you. More importantly, the game still considers you In Combat while enemy ships remain nearby.

That means you can't begin the ground assault until you've sunk or boarded every hostile vessel in the area.

Although these ships can be annoying, they also create an opportunity. If the Jackdaw has taken heavy damage, board one of the enemy ships instead of sinking it outright. After claiming the vessel, choose the Repair option to restore your ship before continuing the siege.

Personally, I do this almost every time during harder Fort battles because it saves a lot of resources and keeps me in the fight longer.

Phase Two: Storm the Fort

Once you've destroyed every defensive structure, it's time to finish the job on foot.

Anchor the Jackdaw outside the Fort and lead Edward along with the crew inside. This section feels very similar to boarding an enemy ship, except you're fighting your way through a large military base instead of a deck.

Your goal is simple: keep pushing forward until the progress bar in the upper-left corner reaches zero.

Let Your Crew Do Some of the Work

Unlike story missions in AC Black Flag Resynced where you're often fighting alone, your pirate crew helps while attacking the Fort.

Instead of charging every enemy head-on, let your crew grab the attention of nearby soldiers. While they're distracted, you can slip behind them for quick assassinations and finish fights much faster.

I always play these sections a little more patiently because your crew naturally creates openings that make combat much easier inside the Fort.

Prioritize Captains

Captains are easily the biggest threat during the assault inside the Fort in Black Flag Resynced.

They're tougher than regular soldiers and often fire their pistols before engaging in melee combat. Whenever I spot one, I immediately use the Rope Dart to stun them before they can attack.

After that, breaking their defense and finishing them becomes much easier. The updated combat system rewards timing and defense breaks, so don't be afraid to wait for the right opening instead of attacking wildly.

Use Your Pistols When You're Surrounded

If several enemies corner you inside the Fort, don't try to duel everyone at once.

Instead, pull out your Flintlock Pistols to stagger or eliminate weaker soldiers before switching back to melee combat. This quickly evens the odds and gives you enough breathing room to deal with stronger opponents.

Likewise, carrying powerful equipment from our Weapons guide for Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced can make these encounters noticeably easier.

Defeat the Fort Commander

After the progress meter reaches zero, Edward and one of his crew members break down the Fort's final door.

Inside, you'll face the Fort Commander.

Fortunately, this isn't a full boss fight. The commander fights much like any other elite enemy, so you can defeat them using normal combat tactics. Once they're down, a short cutscene plays, and the Fort officially becomes yours.

From that point on, the Fort permanently changes ownership and remains under pirate control for the rest of your playthrough.

Tips Before Attacking a Fort

Before sailing into battle, I'd recommend following a few simple tips:

  • Upgrade the Jackdaw's Hull Armor, Broadside Cannons, and Mortar before attempting medium or hard Forts.
  • Stock up on ammunition so you don't run out during longer sieges.
  • Bring enough crew members to keep the Jackdaw operating at full strength.
  • Complete a few Reale Making Guide activities first if you need extra money for upgrades.
  • Save the 💀💀💀 Forts until much later in the game, as their defenses can overwhelm an underpowered ship.
  • If you discover a new island or activity while sailing between Forts, consider stopping for Assassin Contracts or Officer Quests to earn additional rewards before continuing your journey.
