Before you can start Upton Travers, make sure you've completed This Old Cove. That's the unlock requirement for all four Templar Hunts in Black Flag Resynced.

You can finish this part in two ways:

  • The first is to quietly follow the guards until they lead you to Upton's hideout.
  • The second is to assassinate them and loot their bodies for clues.

When you reach the hideout, you'll find Upton standing in the middle of the courtyard. Sneak in through the nearby grass or climb onto the rooftops for an air assassination. Try to assassinate him, but don't expect things to go as planned. A cutscene reveals that Upton actually runs the local Assassin Bureau, and Vance has been lying to you from the start.

Meet Upton by following the exclamation mark on your compass, and keep following him as he explains what's really happening. He tells you that he and Vance each own half of a treasure map, and Vance is trying to steal both pieces for the Templar Jing Lang.

Keep following Upton until he tells you to hide. Jump into the nearby bushes and eavesdrop on the brothers' conversation. Next, follow Upton to Vance's house. Four Templar guards are protecting it. Take out the two guards standing around the garden first, then deal with the two standing at the entrance.

Once the area is clear, check the northern side of the house to find a note on a table underneath an awning. It'll give you the location of Vance and Jing Lang's upcoming meeting.

Go to the tavern and hide underneath a wooden staircase adjacent to it. This is the only spot where you can properly eavesdrop on their conversation, so don't stand anywhere else. When the conversation ends, you'll learn that Vance has hired people to kill Upton. Now go to his location as fast as you can, eliminate the enemies, and then revive Upton.

Upton Travers Quest 3: Upton's Sorrow

Find Upton near the tavern to start the next mission. He's had a rough day and immediately gets into a fistfight with two drunk men.

Since nobody is using weapons, you need to knock them off balance, then finish them with regular attacks.

After the fight, follow Upton as he wanders through Nassau. He'll stop a few times along the way, including one moment where he refuses to leave a group of dancers alone. Pay them 100 Reales so they'll move on and let you continue.

Near the end of the mission, Upton gets himself into trouble again when a group of guards shows up. Defeat the guards to protect him, then talk to Upton to complete the quest.

Meet Upton in the swamp on the western side of Nassau. He'll ask you to eliminate Vance and Jing Lang once and for all.

Head into the swamp, but don't waste time fighting every guard you see. Instead, climb onto the trees and use them to move across the area. Check out the green marker to spot Vance's tent, then assassinate him. You can use Sleep Dart to make him faint and just kill him afterwards.

After Vance falls, Jing Lang will run away. Chase her, but don't bother shooting or attacking her while she's running, since she's immune to damage during the chase. Eventually, she'll stop and fight back with two guards. Defeat the guards first, then continue to eliminate Jing Lang.

Finally, return to Upton, talk to him one last time, and collect your Templar Key to finish the entire questline.
