Finally, after months of rumors of Microsoft Edge shifting to Chromium. We have a testing build of the software. It is available for everyone to download and provide feedback. Chromium is an open source version of Google Chrome browser and you can basically download and build your own browser on top of it. The cool thing about Chromium browsers is that they look and feel like Google Chrome. Additionally, all of the extension and add-ons which work on Chrome will work on other Chromium Browsers as well.
How to Install Edge Chromium
This is the Developer version of Edge and there can be minor bugs in it. You can download the Developer version from the official Microsoft Edge Insider Page. The Developer version of Edge gets updated every week and finally, we will also see a Beta Version of it. There is also a Canary version which gets updated every single day and you can see daily changelogs. However, Canary versions are quite unstable.
How to Install Extensions on Edge Chromium
Open Edge Chromium browser and navigate to the Extensions page. To do that, go to the Edge search bar and type “chrome://extensions” or “edge://extensions”. It will redirect you to the Extension manager page.
Now on the Extension manager page, turn on the option “Allow extensions from other stores”. It is located at the bottom left corner of the page.
After you have turned on the third-party extension option, you should see the “Add to Chrome” button on the extensions page. When you click on “Add to Chrome” button, it will add the extension to Edge Chromium.

StayFocusd helps you stay focused on work by restricting leisure websites. All you have to do is enter the website URL (like Facebook or Reddit) which keeps you distracted from work. StayFocused will ask you to enter a certain amount of time besides the website and for that time interval, you can access the site. Once your daily limit is over, the website will be inaccessible for the entire day.
2. Toggl Button
Toggl is probably one of the most famous Chrome extensions to track time. Apart from the usual features like the ability to track time, budgets, teams, and projects. Toggl offers some advanced features like you can create a different workspace to keep teams and businesses separate. You can not only track time but also get detailed insights about time spent on a particular website or application. It’s all present under Toggl Timeline in the Toggl Web app. Toggl integrates with a number of popular 3rd party apps. I really liked the Pomodoro timer that I use to take necessary power breaks. You can also create an invoice with a 3rd-party app.
If you feel, you don’t need the entire functionality of Toggl, you can use Time Your Web. TimeYourWeb is a Chrome extension that will create a detailed summary of your time spent on different websites. Now, we often do open a lot of websites in the background and they just stay idle. So, this nifty extension will track active and idle time spent on tabs separately which is just great. It also tracks time and displays the collected data in 3 different formats like a flow chart, stack chart, and a summary chart. This is more of a logger which means it will work in the background with no manual input required from you. Just install it and forget it!
4. Checker Plus
Gmail has a wide range of features and Google also provides an extension for it. But, the extension only provides the unread email account and redirects you to the Gmail website for other details. Wouldn’t it be great if you could have access to your entire Gmail in a Chrome Extension? Well, Checker plus for Gmail happens to fulfill that wish for you. Checker plus is the all-in-one chrome extension for Gmail you will ever need. Some of its best features include Multiple Account support, Notifications, and Google Calendar support. You can easily send an email and check emails from the extension itself.

Toby is another productivity extension if you browse a lot on the Internet. I, for that matter, research a lot for my articles so that leads to 20-30 tabs in Google Chrome. So, what Toby does is you can drag and drop your active tags in Toby. That would close that tab and save the state of the website which can be opened later. Now, you can also create Bookmark for that but 20-30 bookmarks would be too much for the toolbar. Instead, I started using Toby which is the first thing you will see when you open the new tab. My most favourite feature would be collections in Toby. I can stack up webpages based on collections. So, if I am researching for multiple topics I just group the webpages by the research topic.
6. Save to Pocket
If you read things on the web, Save to Pocket would be a handy addition. It lets you save web articles and video to your Pocket account and read them later. Basically, it works like your YouTube watch later playlist. The best part is that Pocket brings you the content in an easily-readable form. It removes advertisements and unnecessary content. Once synced, your Pocket saves would be available across devices. The next time you find a long article to read, make sure you save it to Pocket.

Spreed is an extension that helps you speed read through an article or website. Additionally, you can copy and paste the random text into the Spreed Reader. The reader also allows a bunch of configuration options such as setting the word speed, font size, and text color. If you have never tried speed reading, I’d highly recommend you to give it a try. It will increase your efficiency to process information at a greater speed and is a great fundamental skill to have. For people just starting out, decrease the speed to the one you feel comfortable at and then gradually work your way up.
Grammarly is the most popular proofreading app for Chrome and it even works flawlessly on Edge Chromium. It is like your personal proofreader which is not only capable of detecting spelling mistakes but also correcting improper grammar. Grammarly works in real time showing all your errors as you write anything and gives suggestions to correct them. Grammarly also comes with a mobile app and supports syncing and backing up of all your work, along with its proofreading. It also has a premium version starting at $11.66/month.
9. Google Dictionary
The internet is a great place for learning and more often than not, while reading an article, a post or even a comment, you come across a new word which you have no idea of what it means. While you can look it up on a dictionary or open a new tab and search for the word, Google provides a handle little extension using which you can get the meaning of any word just by double-clicking it. Google Dictionary is exceptionally useful when you are trying to learn a new language and even if you aren’t, it’s a quick way to look up the meaning of words.

10. Check My Links
Check My Links is a handy tool for a blogger and also if you are a developer. The extension verifies all the links on your webpage or blog. It revisits all the links and returns results by highlighting the links. Green shows that the link is perfectly valid and Red shows that the link is broken and will return “404: Not Found”. You can also exclude checking of Ads or some particular links. It has an option to specify exclusion links.
11. Scan WP
Now, you often visit WordPress Sites and wonder what’s the theme used. So, Scan WP is a helpful extension which will identify the WordPress theme used on the website. Apart from that it also gives additional information regarding the domain such as strong keywords it’s ranked for, estimated traffic, main competitors for rankings and more.

12. Alexa Traffic Rank
Alexa is a Chrome extenstion provided by Amazon. It tells you the Alexa ranking of the website and the country where it ranks the most. You can also visit the Alexa Site Info page for more detailed information. But, the extension provides much more ease of access. When you visit the website, you have to click on the Alexa icon on the top-right corner. It will give you a summarized ranking and information like the ranking keywords, similar websites and loading sites. It is a must-have extension if you are a blogger.

Another useful extension is Linkclump if you browse a lot over the Internet. It helps you open multiple links in a new window or new tab at once. All you have to do is press “z” key and draw a rectangle around the links you want to open. Linkclump will automatically open all the links in different tab or window as specified. The extension is pretty basic but functions as it says.
We all shop online and coupons are the ones that can save you a lot of money. So, here is an extension called Honey. Honey is a coupon code provider for various online retailers. But what makes it smart is that it intelligently applies all of the coupons available when you checkout. It gets triggered only when you move to the checkout page. It automatically selects the most discounted or best one for you. While outside the US, Honey is more of a hit or miss with most online retailers; but if you are a student in the US and not using Honey, you are losing out on a lot of free savings!
Another Shopping friendly extension is Keepa. Usually, Amazon recommends products by claiming to be on high discount. More or else, you end up buying it. So, here Keepa comes into the picture and tells you whether this best-buy price was available earlier or is just another gimmick. I use it frequently to gauge whether it is the right time to purchase the product.
16. Invisible Hand
Invisible Hand is a must-have extension for any kind of shopping. Invisible hand tells you a comparative price of the product on different websites. Suppose, I am browsing for Samsung SSD on Amazon and I want to know the price on eBay or the official Samsung website. So instead of visiting the sites individually, I just click on the Invisible Hand icon and it tells me the price on numerous websites including eBay and Samsung.
Even if you travel a lot, then you need InvisibleHand. It finds you the best deals on flights, hotels and rental cars, as well as the best price for other things you buy online.

Picture-in-Picture (PiP) allows you to watch videos in a floating window. This window will always play on top of other Windows. So you can keep an eye on what you’re watching while interacting with other sites, or applications. It not only works for YouTube but also on sites like Prime Video, Netflix, etc. You can also resize the floating window and drag it across the screen. Sadly, the floating window doesn’t feature any video controls apart from Play/Pause.
18. Separate Window

20. F.B. (FluffBusting) Purity
Its been few years since FaceBook rolled out its ads and sponsored videos. Initially, it was good, bearable I must say. But now, my FB feed has more ads and sponsored videos than actual posts. To get rid of them, I start using F.B Purity. The extension cleans up your FB feed off ads and sponsored posts. The most amusing thing is the developer keeps on modifying the extension as per FB’s theme changes. I haven’t noticed any significant load time issue or changes in the look and feel of the Facebook website. I would definitely recommend this extension for Edge Chromium and nonetheless even if you use Facebook.

Another extension you might find useful is a password manager. It is a robust password manager that lets you securely store Passwords and card information. Apart from Passwords, you can also store Addresses, Bank Accounts, and Notes. If you use multiple devices, you can also sync data through all your devices. Of course, you can see and access all your stored passwords through a “master password”. Master Password is the only password you will have to remember.
22. Password Checkup
In case you don’t want to use LastPass because providing your passwords to the organization makes you vulnerable, then you can use Password Checkup. It’s an extension made by Google to safeguard your login credentials. Whenever you log in to your account on any website, it verifies the credentials. If your account matches with the affected accounts, you’ll get a warning to change the password. Since you have a data breach news coming every week, I think this extension is the need of the hour.

Google revamped reCAPTCHA to keep abusive traffic away from the websites. But more often than not, Google misunderstood humans as a potential bot. Buster is a Chrome extension which authenticates reCAPTCHA for you. The extension is really simple and effective. When you go to a website and click the reCAPTCHA button, it would load a popup window and give you images to select. Buster adds a button to that popup which you can click to authenticate the CAPTCHA. It doesn’t use the image-based CAPTCHA instead it uses the audio based CAPTCHA. This Chrome extension would only work if it has an audio CAPTCHA.
25. Hover Zoom
If you browse a lot of pictures on the web, Hover Zoom is a must-have extension. Hover Zoom enables a quick preview control wherein if you hover over the image it opens a larger preview of it. It saves you the extra right click and the effort of viewing it on a separate tab. However, my experience with Hover Zoom on Edge has been unpredictable. It works on Google Images, FaceBook but it doesn’t work on popular websites like PixaBay, Reddit, etc. To summarize, it doesn’t work on half of the websites when used with Edge Chromium. But having said, it’s still useful as most of the image searches are either on Google Images or Social Media.
Now, one extension which you will need for sure is AdBlocker. Microsoft Edge doesn’t have an inbuilt adblocker so we will be in a dire need of an Adblocker Extension. The one I prefer is uBlock Origin. It is a promising, open-source ad-block software, which does everything like any other Ad Blocker software but with minimal resources. The USP of this extension is that it allows you to enable different 3rd party filters such as Fanboy’s Enhanced Tracking List, Dan Pollock’s host’s file. The whole interface of uBlock Origin is pretty minimal with a large button to enable/ disable ad-blocking on the top. I didn’t experience a significant difference in the website loading time.
CrankWheel is a handy web utility if you frequently share your screen. You can also use Team Viewer for the same function but the issue is both users need to install Team Viewer. However, with CrankWheel both the parties don’t need to install the extension. The person who wants to share his screen needs to install CrankWheel Chrome Extension and other participants can just join the stream by clicking on the link. CrankWheel generates a random meeting link which you need to share with other participants. Once, you have approved the joining of the participant, he can see your screen. There is no option for the other participants to control the screen. CrankWheel only lets you share the Chrome screen, unlike Team Viewer.
So, these were some of the best extensions you should be using on Edge Chromium. Let me know in the comments below about any cool extension that you use.
