Block DMs, Not Account: X to Decouple Blocking Options

When you block someone’s account on X(Twitter), you also block them from sending you DMs and vice versa. However, X is now working on a new feature where you can block someone from DMs but their account won’t be blocked so you will still see updates from them. Useful if you are tired of people asking for free stuff in the DMs or making weird requests.

The feature was first discovered by two X account users who posted screenshots of the same in action. Here is how they look:

Right now, blocking an account X will disallow them from commenting on your posts as well as sending you DMs. Moving forward, these two will be decoupled so you can block someone from sending you messages asking for free stuff but still let them see your posts.

Elon Musk has confirmed this via a post:

Musk says it the other way though. You will be able to use X for messaging only but not posting if you want. However, in the screenshots, it can be seen that they are blocking someone from sending DMs and not posting. So what’s happening?

We think once DMs and Posts are decoupled, users can choose to block someone from DMs or Posts independently. Works both ways. But we will have to wait for the feature to roll out as it is still in development.
