Bluesky finally introduced a feature that has kept many users loyal to X (formerly Twitter) – Trending Topics. Previously, you could only see posts from the people you follow or algorithmically suggested content. Now, you can see what people are currently discussing on Bluesky, just like on X. Here’s how to use Bluesky’s trending topics, how it compares with X’s approach, and its strengths and weaknesses.

How to Use Trending Topics on Bluesky

Accessing trending topics on Bluesky is pretty straightforward. Just tap the search icon (magnifying glass) at the bottom of the screen. On the desktop, you should see the Search icon on the left sidebar. The Search page also shows a list of Trending and Recommended topics as clickable text bubbles. Selecting a topic takes you directly to posts and discussions related to that topic.

Unlike on X, you can enable or disable the trending topics feature on Bluesky. Useful if you don’t like controversies or need a break from current hot topics and news. To disable trending topics on Blueskky:

  1. Tap the hamburger menu in the top left corner.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Select Content and media.
  4. Turn on/off the Enable trending topics toggle.

Alternatively, you can tap on the cross icon beside the Trending section and select Hide to disable it. You can enable the option later from the settings page as mentioned above.

How Trending Topics on Bluesky Differs From X

There are some key differences between how Bluesky and X have implemented trending topics. For example, Bluesky is currently available in English only. Additionally, specific settings impact the trending topics feature differently, and even the algorithms used by the two platforms vary. Here’s a summary in table format:

While the table highlights key differences, the biggest factor is the community. X (Twitter) thrives on a massive, active user base. Hashtags and celebrity engagement keep conversations buzzing. Bluesky is still new to the game and finding it’s path and audience.

Trending topics should help Bluesky build that momentum.  It shows users what’s hot, and encourages them to join those conversations, leading to more visibility, engagement, and ultimately, growth forthe entire platform. Though it currently misses out on the language and regional trends support, those can be added when the users grow.
