CMF Phone 1's Dimensity 7300 Chip: An Upgrade Over Nothing Phone (2a)?

CMF, the new sub-brand from Nothing, is about to launch its first-ever phone, the CMF Phone 1. As hinted by rumors, the brand has now confirmed the phone will be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7300, marking the chip’s debut in a smartphone. This choice may intrigue you, as Nothing’s own, pricier Phone (2a) uses the slightly older Dimensity 7200 Pro.

The MediaTek Dimensity 7300 is an eight-core System-on-Chip built with TSMC’s 2nd-gen 4nm fabrication process. It has four Cortex-A78 performance cores clocked at 2.5GHz and four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores clocked at 2.0 GHz, coupled with a Mali-G615 MC2 GPU.

Nothing’s co-founder, Akis Evangelidis, explained why they chose the Dimensity 7300 for the CMF Phone 1. He highlighted its good performance, citing scores upwards of 670,000 in AnTuTu Benchmark, and the power efficiency resulting from the newer fabrication process.

The Dimensity 7300 also enables Bluetooth 5.3, Wi-Fi 6, and dual 5G connectivity on the phone. Although the chipset can inherently support Bluetooth 5.4 and Wi-Fi 6E, these features will not be available on the CMF Phone 1, as it is a budget device.

The phone will have up to 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM, expandable up to 16GB with the RAM Booster feature. But hold your expectations as software-based RAM extension features don’t typically work wonders, as explained in our article on why you should disable Samsung’s RAM Plus.

To recall, the Nothing Phone (2a), released earlier this year, uses the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro, an eight-core chipset built on the same 4nm process. It has two high-performance Cortex-A715 cores clocked at 2.8GHz and six efficiency Cortex-A510 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz, along with a Mali-G610 MC4 GPU.

The CMF Phone 1’s Dimensity 7300 chip has more performance cores, which could be better for multitasking. At the same time, Phone (2a)’s Dimensity 7200 Pro has faster cores and two additional GPU cores, potentially making it better for gaming and other demanding tasks.

Let’s break down the differences between the processors in the CMF Phone 1 and the Nothing Phone (2a):

On paper, the Dimensity 7300 handles multi-core tasks better due to two extra performance cores, but the Dimensity 7200 Pro has superior single-core performance and graphics. So, while the 7300 has strengths, it isn’t necessarily an upgrade. We’ll have to wait for real-world tests for a definitive answer.

The CMF Phone 1, featuring the Dimensity 7300, will launch alongside the CMF Buds Pro 2 and Watch Pro 2 on July 8. Wait for our full review where we’ll share detailed benchmarks and comparisons to see how it handles everyday performance.
