Google has been said to be working on a new Desktop Mode for Android. Currently, in the experimental phase, there are plenty of things Google needs to work on to improve the feature. A new report claims that Google’s highly awaited desktop mode may finally see the light of day with Android 17.

Desktop Mode to Launch With Android 17
In a recent live stream, tipster Mishaal Rahman said that Desktop Mode will finally debut with Android 17. He further said that the mode was originally set to launch with Android 16.
However, since Google required more time to polish the feature, it is now likely to be released with Android 17. With Android 16 set to release next month, there isn’t much time left for Google to work on the feature.

In Android 16 beta 4, there is a developer option for “Enable desktop experience features”. Just like Windows, it shows a taskbar at the bottom of the screen.
Users will be able to pin apps in the taskbar and open multiple apps in floating windows. It will also show recent apps and an option to minimize or close them.
Furthermore, there will also be support for external displays via USB-C, and there could be options for wireless connection in the future. This should result in an immersive desktop-like experience.
Google’s Desktop Mode will work similarly to Samsung’s Dex feature and Motorola’s Ready For functionality. Although Google’s offering seems a bit basic in comparison and there are several things it needs to work on.
Given that Android 16 is just around the corner, we won’t have to wait long to see Google’s implementation of Desktop mode. Although only time will tell if the feature will be limited to Pixel phones or come to other devices as well.
