MAJOR SPOILER WARNING: This article contains heavy spoilers about Hugh Williams' fate and Pragmata's endings. If you haven't finished the game and want to experience the story yourself, stop reading now.

Hugh Williams' fate is one of the most talked-about aspects of Pragmata's story, especially after players reach the game's conclusion. What happens to the security expert who teams up with Diana to escape the lunar research facility? Here's everything you need to know about whether Hugh survives Pragmata.

Does Hugh Die in Pragmata?

The answer depends on which ending you see. Pragmata has two endings: the Normal Ending and the True Ending. Hugh's fate is left ambiguous in the Normal Ending but becomes clearer in the True Ending.

In the Normal Ending, Hugh is infected by Dead Filament during the final confrontation. Dead Filament is the red crystalline substance that corrupts living tissue and cannot be removed by Diana's Lim Eraser ability. During gameplay, Diana explicitly states that once Dead Filament infects someone's cells and eats them away, "they're gone for good."

The Normal Ending shows Hugh and Diana completing their mission, but Hugh's infection is clearly visible. The ending leaves his ultimate fate uncertain, with no confirmation whether he survives the Dead Filament corruption or succumbs to it after the credits roll.

In the True Ending, which unlocks through the post-game Unknown Signal mode, an additional post-credits scene plays that the Normal Ending doesn't include. This extended scene provides more clarity about what happens to Hugh after the infection.

To see the True Ending, you must complete the Unknown Signal mode requirements:

  • Reach 100% completion in all sectors
  • Defeat all Mk. II powered-up versions of bosses
  • Complete all 10 simulation pod missions in the Hidden Chamber
  • Obtain the Black Box Mod
  • Equip the Black Box Mod and defeat the final boss again

The True Ending's extra scene shows the full consequences of Hugh's Dead Filament infection and reveals whether Diana finds a way to save him. Without spoiling the specific details of that final scene, the True Ending provides a more complete answer to Hugh's fate than the ambiguous Normal Ending.

Most players who finish only the main campaign walk away uncertain about Hugh's survival due to the Dead Filament infection. The True Ending exists specifically to address this question and provide closure for players invested in Hugh and Diana's story. Check out our Pragmata wiki for more guides.
