WhatsApp has been busy working on several new features lately. They have shifted focus to improving the video calling experience for Apple users by adding AR (Augmented Reality) filters and effects to video calls using AI. The feature isn’t new though. Android users have been enjoying it since July this year. WhatsApp is only bringing it to the Apple ecosystem now. I remember back in the day, Apple used to get features first.

WhatsApp to Bring AR Video Call Effects and Filters to iPhone

WABetaInfo found the AR call effects and filter options in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS 24.17.10.74 which was recently submitted to TestFlight. Here is what you get.

Pro Tip: Do you use WhatsApp Web? Here are some amazing WhatsApp Web tips and tricks for you to get the most out of it.

  • AR Filters and Effects: WhatsApp is rolling out AR filters and effects, allowing users to alter their appearance during video calls with dynamic facial overlays. This feature, already available for Android users since July, is now arriving for iOS.
  • Background Blurring and Effects: Inspired by apps like Zoom and FaceTime, WhatsApp now lets you blur your background or choose from preset scenes, ensuring privacy or just hiding a messy room. You know who you are.
  • Low Light and Touch Up: For those late-night calls, the new Low Light mode will enhance your video quality using AI, while the Touch Up feature ensures you always look your best.

Note that your last configuration settings will be saved and used as the default on your next video call. Interestingly, Apple also introduced background filters a few days back on their FaceTime app itself.

The features are already available to those who have installed and are using the TestFlight app to test beta versions of WhatsApp. While anybody can join the WhatsApp beta, there is normally a wait time as it is usually full. AR call filters and effects should roll out to the public via the App Store soon in the coming week.

So which is your favorite video-calling app?
