Fortnite's Save the World mode is finally going free to play on April 16th, 2026. If you've only ever played Battle Royale, this is your chance to try the original Fortnite experience, and it's a lot more than you might expect.

What Is Save the World?

Save the World is the original Fortnite game mode that came before Battle Royale even existed. It's a cooperative PvE experience where you and up to three other players fight off waves of monsters, build defenses, rescue survivors, and complete missions.

Unlike Battle Royale, Save the World actually has a full story. It explains a lot of the Fortnite universe, including what The Storm really is and where it came from. If you've ever had questions about the lore in Battle Royale, Save the World has had the answers this whole time.

Epic Games released an introductory narrative video ahead of the F2P launch, and it's actually the game's opening cutscene. It sets up the world where the storm is coming, civilization is on the edge, and you're a commander trying to hold things together.

You'll meet characters like Ray and Ramirez early on. The story unfolds through cutscenes and audio logs during missions, though the way it's delivered can feel a little scattered at times. Still, it's a fun story that Battle Royale players will enjoy, especially if you've ever wanted more context for the Fortnite universe.

Save the World Hero Missions, Quests, and Events

This is the core loop of Save the World:

  • Missions are what you do every time you drop into the game world. Each mission gives you a specific objective, like rescuing survivors or defending a structure. You have to complete that objective to finish the mission and earn your rewards.
  • Quests are longer-term tasks that sit on top of your missions. They might ask you to kill a certain number of husks, collect specific items, or complete several missions of the same type. Every quest you finish gives you rewards, and completing them is how you push your progression forward.
  • Events are limited-time quest paths with special rewards, like exclusive Event Heroes and Event Weapons. Events usually give you event tickets as you play, which you can spend in a dedicated Event Store to grab special Event Llamas and unique loot.

Save the World Hero Classes

When you start Save the World, you have to pick a Hero Class. Don't stress too much about this at the beginning, just pick whichever one looks fun to you. The classes only really start to matter once you hit the mid-to-late game, where things get harder.

Here's a simple breakdown of what each class does best:

1. Outlander

The Outlander is great if you're playing solo or with an incomplete squad. Their T.E.D.D.Y. sentry robot acts like an extra teammate, holding down chokepoints and dealing damage on its own. The Seismic Smash ability is also super useful for collecting materials and completing missions that ask you to destroy objects around the map.

2. Ninja

The Ninja is all about speed and mobility. If you're doing a mission with a tight time limit, the Ninja is your best bet. You can also build a high-damage setup on this class if you like aggressive playstyles.

3. Constructor

The Constructor is arguably the most important class at high-level play. Some Constructor builds can actually fortify your buildings. In a tough mission, try to have a Constructor in your squad.

4. Soldier

The Soldier is another strong DPS option, similar to the Ninja. Their signature ability, Goin' Commando, summons a powerful Gatling gun, but at higher levels, your best weapons will outscale it. This class is a lot of fun to play, especially early on.

Save the World Monsters

Save the World throws all kinds of enemies at you as you progress. Here's what you'll be dealing with:

The most common enemies are Husks and Mist Monsters, which attack on sight and come in all shapes and sizes with different behaviors. Watch out for Mimics, too! They disguise themselves as treasure chests and spring at you when you get close. Trolls are also worth hunting down since they hoard BluGlo, a key resource you'll sometimes need for missions.

Once you get deeper into the game, you'll start running into elemental monsters. These enemies have specific weaknesses, so using the right weapon type matters a lot.

Monster TypeWeak ToExtra Damage To
Fire MonstersWater weaponsWood structures
Nature MonstersFire weaponsMetal structures
Water MonstersNature weaponsStone structures

This is especially important when you're planning your base. If you know you're facing Fire monsters in a mission, building in wood is a bad idea. Matching your weapon to the enemy type also makes a big difference in how fast you can take them down.

Should You Play Fortnite Save the World?

Yes! Save the World has lived in the shadow of Battle Royale for years, and most people only knew about it as a way to grind Battle Pass XP. But it's a full game on its own with a real story, deep progression, tons of weapons, and co-op gameplay that's actually really fun.

With it going free on April 16, there's no reason not to give it a shot. Try it out and pick a class that looks interesting to you, and enjoy battling the monsters to save the world.
