  • A new “mark as read” button is being tested on the Gmail app for Android.
  • This new button will appear on your Gmail notifications, along with the Delete and Reply buttons.
  • The feature is still in testing, but it is available on some selected accounts.

You might agree that there are plenty of times when you get a Gmail notification that you don’t want to open immediately. So, like most of us, you just swipe it away to clear up your notification panel. But then it comes back again as a reminder or stacks up with other notifications, which gets pretty annoying. Well, it looks like Google heard us. They’re now adding a new “Mark as read” button right in the Gmail notification panel on Android.

As reported by Android Authority, Gmail is testing a new feature on Android. You’ll now see a “Mark as read” button directly on your email notifications, alongside the usual Reply and Delete options. This basically means that you can clear out emails faster without opening Gmail.

This small change might seem minor, but it can save a lot of time. If you receive a lot of promotional or low-priority emails, marking them as read right from the notification bar helps you keep your inbox tidy without the hassle of opening the Gmail app every time. It’s useful for people who rely on Gmail heavily throughout the day.

When Will It Roll Out?

Gmail’s “Mark as read” button seems to be rolling out slowly and selectively. It has only appeared for a few of the accounts till now. It will depend on the Google account, despite having the latest Gmail app version (2025.06.15).

If you haven’t seen the option yet, you’re not alone. Gmail is known to take its time with wide rollouts, so this feature may still take a while to reach everyone.

That’s all we know for now about the new “Mark as read” button on Gmail for Android. It’s a small but handy feature that many users have been waiting for. Stay tuned for more updates like this.
