Chrome’s New Feature Makes It Easier to Close Unused Tabs

Most of us have 10s of tabs open in different browser windows on any given day. This makes it difficult to manage them or even find what you are looking for. Sadly, most of these tabs remain unused for long hours unnecessarily hogging system resources. Chrome will make it easier to close unused tabs with an update.

In the latest Canary build of Chrome, Google is experimenting with a feature that makes managing old tabs easier by offering to close them with a single click.

Leopeva64 shared screenshots and clips on X (formerly Twitter), giving us a glimpse of how the new feature works. When you have too many tabs open, a Close unused tabs button will appear in the tab strip, suggesting you tidy up. If you dismiss it by clicking the X button, the prompt won’t appear again for the remainder of the session.

There’s also a new Declutter option in Chrome’s Organize Tabs section, accessible from the Tab Search menu. This feature shows how many tabs haven’t been touched for at least seven days, making it easy to decide what to keep and what to close.

Though still in the testing phase, Closed unused tabs and Declutter could roll out in a future Chrome update, making it easier to manage browser clutter. If you want to give it a try ahead of time, you can download Chrome Canary on a Windows PC.
