YouTube Shorts is getting a major upgrade with Google DeepMind’s Veo 2. Now, you can generate clips using AI and add them to your Shorts or even create the entire YouTube Shorts using just text prompts. What is Veo 2 and How Does It Generate Shorts?
Veo 2 is Google DeepMind’s text-to-video AI model, designed to create realistic and detailed videos from simple descriptions. Simply describe your scene—like “a sunset over mountains with flying birds”—and Veo 2 brings it to life. Currently, it’s one of the good AI video generators on paper promising realistic physics and human movements. However, the full public release is still pending.
Google is bringing this model to the YouTube app to generate Shorts. YouTube has a Dream Screen feature that generates backgrounds using AI. With the help of Veo 2, it can now generate entire standalone clips that you can use in any of your YouTube Shorts. So you can choose to create a video with all the clips generated by AI or use this for scenes that are hard to film. How to Use Veo 2 in YouTube Shorts
Currently, Veo 2 on YouTube is available for all creators in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. YouTube has announced that a global rollout is coming soon. If you can access the feature, here’s how you can use it.
- Open the YouTube Shorts camera.
- Tap the lower-left icon to open the media picker.
- Then tap Create to generate clips using AI.
- Enter a text prompt describing your video idea, pick a style, and then tap Create.
- Once generated, you can trim and add the clip to your Short.
- Then you can record or upload the remaining clips or continue generating using AI to make the complete Short.
To ensure transparency, YouTube will label all AI-generated videos with SynthID watermarks. These watermarks are invisible to the human eye but can be detected using software tools. So while showing it to the users, YouTube will automatically detect that you are using AI-generated clips and label “AI-generated” in the shorts feed. So users can identify AI content and prevent misuse, ensuring viewers know when videos are AI-generated.
Having Veo 2 directly inside YouTube Shorts Creator lets users generate clips that they cannot record for themself. These generated clips do not have any copyrights and you can use them however you want. This update positions YouTube Shorts to compete more strongly with platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels by giving creators powerful new tools to express their creativity.
