Google has introduced a new feature called Recap in Google Photos. It’s like Spotify Wrapped but for your photos and videos. This feature compiles your year’s memories and presents them with animations and fun insights. Here’s everything you need to know about Google Photos recap for 2024.

What’s in Google Photos Recap 2024?

Google Photos Recap 2024 is divided into two main parts: a Recap memory and personalized insights.

Recap Memory

A one-minute highlight reel showcasing your top photos and videos from the year. But the fun part is that Google adds cinematic effects, fun graphics, and background music to make it worth your time. You will find these memories at the top of the Google Photos app in the memories carousel.

Select users in the U.S. can enable Gemini AI-powered captions from Google Photos Settings > Preferences > Gemini Features and turn on both Use Gemini in Photos and Gemini-powered memories. Users who opted in will receive a version of Recap with the Gemini captions highlighting the two biggest moments from your year.

Insights

Along with memories, Google adds fun stats about your year in the same memories carousel. Here are the insights you get:

  • Year in Smiles: Total smiles captured and who you smiled most with.
  • Year in Color: Your most snapped colors.
  • Top Faces: The people you photographed the most.
  • Longest Streak: The longest consecutive days you took pictures.
  • 2024 Vibes: Highlights your top three photo themes or personas.

How to Use the 2024 Recap

The Google Photos 2024 Recap is available to all users, including those on the free tier; no subscription is required to access this feature. However, certain advanced functionalities, such as the Gemini AI-powered captions, are currently limited to select users in the U.S.

You can access your Recap from the top memories carousel in Google Photos app on both Android and iOS. In case that is not available yet, make sure to enable Memories and Face Groups option in Google Photos settings. Then turn on Google Photos notifications, so that the app will alert you when your Recap is ready.

Once available, your Recap will stay in the Memories carousel through December and move to your photo grid in January, so you can revisit it anytime.

Share and Relive Your Memories

Google makes it easy to share your Recap memories and insights on social media or through messaging apps, letting you and your loved ones enjoy the highlights of the year together.

The 2024 Recap is rolling out now, so check your Google Photos app to see if yours is ready. It’s a creative way to look back at the moments that shaped your year.
