Nothing Phone 2a

Nothing recently released the first beta of its Nothing OS 3.0. The new software introduces several features, including lock screen customization, new animations, a smart app drawer, and more. Additionally, it now allows you to check the current battery health. In this article, I’ll show you how to check the battery health and cycle count of your Nothing phone.

The beta is currently available for the Nothing Phone (2a), with availability for other devices as follows: Nothing Phone (2) in November 2024, Nothing Phone (1) and Nothing Phone (2a) Plus in December 2024, and CMF Phone 1 also in December 2024.

You can either install the open beta (as it becomes available) or wait for the stable update.

Checking Battery Health on Your Nothing Phone

Once your Nothing phone is running Nothing OS 3.0, follow the steps below:

  1. Open the Settings app on your Nothing phone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on System.
  3. Choose Device Diagnostics and tap on Component Health.
  4. Here, select Battery Status.
  5. On the next screen, you’ll see your Nothing phone’s battery health and the current charge cycle count.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t show the battery percentage like it does on iPhones. Instead, it indicates whether the battery’s health is good or needs attention. As for the cycle count, it shows how many times you’ve fully charged your phone, even accounting for partial charging sessions (for example, if you charge from 60% to 100% once and then from 20% to 80%, that completes a total of 100% and counts as one cycle).

Using AccuBattery for More Insights

While Nothing OS 3.0 gives you a basic overview of battery health, if you’re looking for more detailed insights, you can use the AccuBattery app.

AccuBattery is a free, third-party app designed to monitor and analyze your phone’s battery performance. It tracks your charging and discharging patterns, including the time it takes to charge from 0% to 100% and the duration of battery life when discharging from 100% to 0%.

Based on this data, AccuBattery estimates your phone’s current battery capacity in milliampere-hours (mAh). It then compares this estimated capacity to the manufacturer’s stated design capacity for a new battery. This comparison helps determine your battery’s health percentage, indicating how well your battery is retaining its original capacity over time.

Just install AccuBattery, permit it to run in the background, and charge your phone from below 15% to 100% multiple times. Within 4-5 sessions (or roughly a week of regular use with charging and discharging), it will estimate your battery health.

Now, AccuBattery isn’t 100% accurate. Expect an error margin of 2-5%. However, it’s a good way to get an idea of your battery health and how it performs over time (which will decrease) based on your usage and charging patterns.

Tips to Maintain Your Battery Health

While battery health degradation is completely normal and inevitable for a lithium-ion battery, there are certain ways to slow down the rate of degradation. I’d recommend not stressing too much about it—just get the battery replaced by the manufacturer once it’s deteriorated enough. However, if you want to take better care of your electronics, these tips can help:

  • Avoid charging your Nothing phone in extremely hot temperatures. Don’t leave it charging on your car’s dashboard, avoid charging it in hot environments regularly, and refrain from playing games or using the phone while it’s charging.
  • Batteries don’t perform well under extreme conditions. They’re most stressed when fully charged (i.e., 100%) or when the battery is extremely low, around 0-10%. Try to keep it between 40-80% and charge it when needed, rather than always charging from 0 to 100%.
  • Use Smart Charging features. If you charge your phone overnight or for long hours, enable Smart Charging or set a charging limit in Settings > Battery > Battery Health. This prevents the phone from staying at 100% for too long, reducing stress on the battery.
  • Avoid fast charging regularly. Fast charging is convenient, but frequent use can generate more heat and contribute to faster battery wear. Try to use a slower charger when you’re not in a hurry.

By following these tips and regularly monitoring your battery health, you can ensure your Nothing phone remains in great shape for years to come. Stay tuned for more such tips, tricks, and how-tos.
