Google recently introduced a new Google Gemini feature called Gems. A Gemini Gem is a custom Gemini chatbot, trained and tailored for one specific task or project. For example, you can create a custom Gemini Gem that writes content in your preferred style or teaches a new language in a way that suits your learning style. Think of Gemini Gems as custom GPTs in ChatGPT with a set of unique instructions around the task or project.
Google has some premade Gems. One is for checking grammatical mistakes while another helps find code errors. But you can create your custom Gems easily provided you are subscribed to the Advanced plan. Here is how you can create your own Google Gemini Gem chatbot.
How to Create a Custom Gem on Google Gemini
Creating a custom Gem in Google Gemini allows you to automate personalized tasks based on your preferences. For instance, I created a Travel Guru Gem for an upcoming trip to Kerala, where I input details like my budget, food preferences (veg or non-veg), and travel companions. Now, instead of repeatedly entering that information every time I want to find a food joint, I can simply ask the Gem questions like:
- What are the best hotels?
- What are the top places to visit?
- Suggest good places to eat near me.
Since it already knows my food and traveling preferences, it suggests options tailored for me. Here’s how you can create your own custom Google Gemini Gem:
Step 1 – Open the Google Gemini Website
Open Google Gemini website in your browser. Once on the main page, click on the Gem Manager option located in the sidebar. This will show you a list of pre-made Gems.
To create a customized Gem in Gemini, click on the New Gem button.
Step 2 – Set Up Your New Gem
A pop-up window will appear with two panes. The left pane carries an option to name your Gem and enter specific instructions. On the right, you’ll see a preview of how your Gem is working.
For best results, provide as many details as possible. The more information and specific instructions Gem chatbot has on what you want it to do, the more tailored and useful its suggestions will be. For example, in my Travel Guru Gem, I specified that I am vegetarian, prefer flights over trains, and have a low budget. This ensures that when I ask the Gem to find places to visit or eat, it gives me results that match my criteria.
3. Enhance Instructions with Gemini’s Help
After entering basic instructions, you can improve them using Google Gemini’s rewriting feature. Click Re-write Instructions to make Gemini refine your input, making it more detailed and optimized for better performance. Review the changes carefully and if anything doesn’t align with your goals, you can edit and fine-tune the instructions.
Step 4 – Test and Save Gem Using Preview Feature
Use the Preview feature to test how the Gem performs before saving it. Enter sample inputs and check responses. If required, change instructions, add more details, and remove anything unnecessary to fine-tune Gem’s responses.
Once you’re satisfied with the results, click the Save button in the top-right corner of the page. Your custom Google Gemini Gem is now ready to use.
Step 5 – Access and Edit Your Gems
You will find all created Gems on the Gem Manager page under the My Gems section. You can also access it from the sidebar where clicking on it will start a new chat with that Gem. You can open multiple chats with the same Gem just like you would with Gemini.
If you ever need to update your Gem, click the three-dot menu next to it and select Edit. This will reopen the pop-up, allowing you to adjust the instructions and save any changes.
What You Can Do With Custom Gems
You can use custom Gems for various tasks where you have to do a repeated task or in your projects, trips, etc. Apart from writing content and planning trips, you can also use Gems as your financial assistant, generate ideas for creating new content, manage your project, and even as your personal assistant to manage your daily schedule.
ChatGPT also has a similar feature called GPTs but it offers more functionality. It allows you to upload up to 20 documents to train the custom GPT, you can enable/disable features, etc. OpenAI also features a GPT store where you can search for useful GPTs built by others. It’s a thriving community.
