How to Lock Payment Methods on Google Chrome

Chrome allows you to save debit and credit cards as payment methods, making it easier to fill in payment details when needed. Once saved, Chrome will suggest these payment options, enabling you to autofill them with a single tap.

However, until recently, there was no lock or verification step, meaning anyone using your device could potentially access your saved payment methods—posing a significant privacy risk. Fortunately, Google now offers the option to lock your payment methods. Here’s how you can enable this feature.

Manually Verify Your Payment Methods on Chrome

The feature was introduced in Chrome version 129, so make sure you’re running Chrome 129 or later. While it’s available across all operating systems, from desktop to mobile, it does not sync between devices. This means you’ll need to manually enable the lock on each device where you use Chrome.

You can enable it when Chrome shows a pop-up asking you to activate it. You can also manually enable/disable from Chrome Settings, as outlined in the steps below.

Lock Payment Methods on Chrome Desktop:

  1. Open the Chrome browser, click on the three-dot menu, and select Settings.
  2. In Settings, go to Autofill and passwords > Payment methods.
  3. Next, enable Manually verify every time you pay using autofill.
  4. Finally, authenticate using your fingerprint scanner, face scanner, or the PIN you use to unlock your device.

Lock payment Methods on Chrome Android:

  1. Open the Chrome browser, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, and select Settings.
  2. In Settings, select Payment methods.
  3. Now, enable Verify manually every time you pay using autofill.
  4. Finally, authenticate using your fingerprint scanner, face scanner, or the PIN you use to unlock your device.

Lock Payment Methods on Chrome iOS:

  1. Open the Chrome browser, tap the three-dot menu at the bottom-right corner.
  2. Select Settings > Payment methods.
  3. Here, enable Always verify when using autofill.
  4. Finally, authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID. You can also use your iPhone PIN.

Once enabled, Chrome will continue to recommend available payment methods when you’re entering payment details.

However, when you tap on a saved method, you’ll need to authenticate using your device’s biometrics or PIN to autofill the payment details.

Chrome’s Payment Method Lock Needs More Options

While Chrome offers a lock for payment methods, it only requires authentication once, and after that, it won’t ask for verification for the next 3 minutes. This means anyone with access to your device during that time can use your payment details.

Unfortunately, you can’t change the timeout settings, choose a specific verification method, or set a separate PIN for payments. You are limited to enabling the feature and using it as configured by default.
