How to Make and Use Custom Stickers for Your Discord Server

Discord, the go-to chat app for communities, offers plenty of ways to express yourself—whether it’s through text, emojis, GIFs, or even stickers. Stickers are special because users can create custom stickers for each server, adding a unique, personal touch to your space. Imagine whipping out a sticker of your friend’s hilarious face from last week’s video call on your gang’s personal server.

In this guide, I will walk you through what stickers are, how to use them, and how to make and handle custom stickers for your server. Let’s dive in.

What Are Stickers and How to Use Them

Stickers are image-like graphics you can send in chats to convey emotions or add some flair. They’re similar to emojis but much more detailed and expressive.

To send a sticker in any server or even a Discord DM:

  1. Click on the sticker icon in the text box. On mobile, tap the Emoji icon and switch to the Stickers tab.
  2. From the pop-up, select the sticker you want to send.

It’s pretty easy and standard to send a sticker on Discord. But how do you make a sticker on Discord?

As mentioned, you can also have custom stickers for each server. While anyone in the server can use these custom stickers once they’ve joined, only server admins with the Manage Emojis and Stickers permission can upload them.

Before diving into how to set up custom stickers for your server, keep in mind that there are limits to how many you can upload. Free servers allow only 5 custom stickers, while Nitro boosted servers offer increased limits based on their level.

Here’s a quick overview of sticker limits:

  • Free servers: 5 custom stickers
  • Level 1 boosted servers: 15 stickers
  • Level 2 boosted servers: 30 stickers
  • Level 3 boosted servers: 60 stickers

Having said that, here’s how you can make and upload stickers into Discord server.

How to Make Stickers in Discord and Things to Remember

Creating stickers is as simple as editing an image on Discord. However, here are a few things to follow to create a sticker:

  1. Pick an image that you want to use as a sticker and crop the image into a square (1:1 ratio) in any image editing app.
  2. Keep the resolution 320×320 pixels to make the sticker bigger and perfect for Discord.
  3. If you want a sticker with no background, you can remove the background with remove.bg.
  4. Save the image in PNG format for static stickers or APNG and Lottie formats for animated ones. You need to be on at least a Level 1 boosted server to upload an animated sticker.
  5. Make sure the sticker size is not above 512 KB (static or animated).

If you want to simplify the process, you can use tools like Canva or Kapwing, which have Discord sticker templates. Now your sticker is ready for upload.

How to Upload Stickers to Your Discord Server

Once your sticker is ready, follow these steps to upload it:

  1. Open Discord on your desktop or web browser. The mobile app doesn’t support sticker uploads yet.
  2. Click on your server’s name in the top-left corner, then select Server Settings.
  3. In the left sidebar, find and click on the Stickers tab.
  4. Click on Upload Sticker, then select your PNG, APNG, or GIF file.
  5. Assign a name, a matching emoji, and a description for your sticker. This makes it easier for others to find when typing emojis in the chat.
  6. Click Upload, and your sticker will appear in the server’s sticker collection, ready for everyone to use.

You can only send custom stickers in the specific server where they were uploaded. However, if you have Discord Nitro, you can use custom stickers from any server on any other Discord server. You just need to be a member of the server where the sticker was uploaded to use it anywhere.
