How to Remap or Reprogram the Copilot Key on Windows 11

With the launch of the new Snapdragon X series processor, Microsoft also announced the Copilot+ PC lineup. All Windows computers eligible for Copilot+ PC must meet minimum requirements, such as 16 GB of RAM, a 256 GB SSD, and an NPU with 40+ TOPS. However, you’ll notice one more thing with Copilot+ PCs: a dedicated Copilot key on the laptop keyboard.

Currently, in the stable version of Windows 11, there’s no option to remap this key to open other applications. But that’s about to change. In the new Windows Insider Preview Build 22635.4225 (Beta Channel) and above, you can remap the Copilot key to open a different app or Search. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Settings app (Windows + I) and navigate to Personalization > Text input.
  2. Under the ‘Customize Copilot key on keyboard’ option, select your preferred app from the drop-down menu.

Note 1: To open a different app, it must be packaged as an MSIX file.

Note 2: If your keyboard doesn’t have a Copilot key, adjusting this setting will not affect it. Some popular apps packaged using MSIX are Microsoft Edge, Notepad++, Microsoft 365 Apps, VLC Media Player, and 7-Zip.

Aside from Copilot key remapping, the latest Windows Insider Build is also testing new features like accessing content directly from your mobile device via the Start menu, a gamepad keyboard layout for the on-screen keyboard, and more.
