How to Set ChatGPT as Default Voice Assistant on Android

Most Android phones come equipped with Google Assistant or the newly introduced Google Gemini AI as their default voice assistant. But many people prefer ChatGPT over Google Gemini. Especially, after OpenAI introduced their new voice mode feature that works in the background. While there is no native option yet, I found a few clever workarounds to set ChatGPT’s voice mode as your Android phone’s voice assistant. Here they are.

Method 1: VoiceGPT Plugin (For All Android Devices)

This is a plugin for the ChatGPT app that allows you to set ChatGPT as your default voice assistant, replacing Google Gemini or Google Assistant. Here are the steps to install VoiceGPT plugin and set ChatGPT as your default voice assistant:

  1. Install ChatGPT: If you haven’t done so already, download the official ChatGPT app from the Play Store. Set up your account – VoiceGPT won’t work unless you are signed in.
  2. Download the Plugin: Go to the VoiceGPT Plugin page on GitHub and download the latest version of the app-release.apk file.
  3. Install VoiceGPT: Install the app once the APK file is downloaded.
  4. Set ChatGPT as Default: Open the installed app and tap on Set up voice assistant. This will bring up the settings menu where you can choose the default voice assistant for your Android phone. Select VoiceGPT, and you’re good to go!

Now, ChatGPT is your default assistant, and you can trigger it using the same method you would for Google Assistant. It can be the power button, using a voice command, or a shortcut.

Method 2: Using RegiStar (Samsung Phones Only)

The problem with the first method is that you can use either Google Assistant or ChatGPT Voice mode but you can’t use both. What if you want to use Google’s assistant for some tasks and ChatGPT for other actions?

Samsung’s Good Lock app helps customize various smartphone features like camera, home screen, lock screen, and more using different modules. One of the modules within Good Lock is RegiStar. It lets you remap hardware buttons like the power button and assign specific actions like launching apps. Here’s how you can use this module to open ChatGPT’s voice mode with the power button, just like the default voice assistant:

  1. Download ChatGPT: First, head to the Play Store and install the ChatGPT app. Set up your account and ensure the voice mode feature is enabled.
  2. Install Good Lock: Now, download the Good Lock app from the Galaxy Store (not the Play Store, as it’s exclusive to Samsung).
  3. Add RegiStar: Inside Good Lock, navigate to the Life Up section, and find the RegiStar module. Download and install it. RegiStar allows you to customize what happens when you press or hold the side key (power button).
  4. Set Side Key Action: Open RegiStar and tap enable Side key press and hold action.
  5. Select ChatGPT: In the next menu, choose Open App. Scroll through the list of apps and select ChatGPT. Tap the gear icon next to it and choose the Voice option.

Now, whenever you long-press the power button, ChatGPT will open in voice mode, effectively replacing Google Assistant or Gemini on your Samsung phone. However, unlike method 1, it will open voice mode inside the ChatGPT app rather than opening the voice mode on your home screen.

The benefit is that you can use both Google Assistant and ChatGPT voice mode as and when need be. No need to sacrifice one for the other.

Method 3: Use ChatGPT Quick Settings Toggle

If you’re not looking to fully replace your default assistant but still want easy access to ChatGPT’s voice mode, adding a ChatGPT toggle to your Quick Settings is a convenient option. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Swipe down from the top of your screen to access Quick Settings.
  2. Tap the Edit (pencil icon) to modify your Quick Settings options.
  3. Look for the ChatGPT toggle and drag it to your active Quick Settings bar.

Now, you can easily tap this button anytime you want to use ChatGPT’s voice assistant, even though it’s not set as your default assistant. It’s quick, easy, and accessible from any screen.

The benefit is that you can use both Google Assistant and ChatGPT voice mode as and when need be. No need to sacrifice one for the other.

ChatGPT as Your Default

These quick workarounds can easily help you use both Google Assistant or Google Gemini along with ChatGPT’s voice mode on your phone. When you start a conversation, it opens a new ChatGPT chat, and you can also access all your conversations from the ChatGPT app or web later.

However, note that these methods will only open ChatGPT’s standard voice mode for now, not the advanced voice mode. Still, the standard voice mode offers more benefits and features than Gemini in voice capabilities.
