If you’ve ever chatted on Discord with someone who speaks another language, you know how useful a translation tool can be. However, Discord doesn’t provide a built-in translation tool. As always, there is a bot that can help translate messages on Discord.
A third-party app called BetterDiscord offers a Translator plugin to bridge the language gap. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use it to translate messages on Discord.
⚠️ Warning: BetterDiscord violates Discord’s terms of service. However, the BetterDiscord team claims that only certain plugins are against Discord’s terms, and Translator plugin we are using is not among them. But it is recommended to still proceed with caution.
Step 1: Install BetterDiscord
First things first, you need BetterDiscord to get this plugin working.
- Go to the BetterDiscord website and Download the installer for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux).
- Open the downloaded file and follow the installation instructions.
- Restart the Discord app to activate BetterDiscord.
For more detailed instructions, read our guide on how to install Better Discord.
Step 2: Get the Translator Plugin
The Translator plugin is what will allow you to translate messages in real time.
- Visit the Translator plugin page and click Download to save the plugin file.
- Open Discord, go to User Settings > BetterDiscord > Plugins.
- Click Open Plugins Folder to open the folder on your computer.
- Drag and drop the downloaded Translator plugin file into this folder.
- Return to the Plugins section in Discord and toggle on the Translator plugin.
- Click the Settings icon next to the plugin to configure it. Set preferences like the translation service (e.g., Google Translate) and the default language.
Step 3: How to Use the Translator Plugin
Now that it’s set up, here’s how you can use it to translate messages.
Translating Incoming Messages
- Right-click on a message in a different language.
- Select Translate Message from the context menu to translate it to your default language.
- To change the default language, click the translate icon in the text box and select your desired language under the output language in received messages.
Translating Outgoing Messages
- Write your message as usual, click the Translate button in the text box, and enable the toggle beside Translate your messages before sending.
- Select the language you want the message translated to under Output language in your sent messages.
- Close the pop-up and send the message – it will be sent translated.
With BetterDiscord and the Translator plugin, you can translate both incoming and outgoing messages, making your Discord conversations smoother across languages. However, this option only works on Discord’s Windows, Mac, and Linux apps but not on the web, Android, or iPhone. Anyhow, with this small plugin, you can translate any message even the old ones that you received before installing the plugin.
