How to Use ChatGPT With Siri on iPhone and What We found

Apple has supercharged Siri in iOS 18.2 by integrating ChatGPT. But how does ChatGPT benefit the end user? Plenty of ways. For example, with traditional Siri, certain questions might only yield web search results as Siri cannot handle them directly. However, with ChatGPT integration, Siri can now provide clear, direct answers extremely quickly instead of just a few web links. It can also solve math problems, answer riddles, and provide more detailed explanations for almost any question you ask. Here’s a guide on how to use ChatGPT with Siri on iPhones running iOS 18.2 and eligible for AI.

Step 1: Update to iOS 18.2

This feature is only available on iOS 18.2, which is currently in developer beta 1. To access it, you will need to either switch to the beta channel and update to iOS 18.2 or wait for the stable release of version 18.2. You can check your current iOS version or update to 18.2 by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

Step 2: Set Up Siri With ChatGPT

Once you are on iOS 18.2, you need to enable the ChatGPT integration as it is turned off by default.

  1. Go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. Enable Apple Intelligence if not enabled prior. There is a waitlist you must join.
  2. Select ChatGPT and tap Setup to enable the integration.
  3. Log in to your ChatGPT account if you want to save your requests. However, sign-in is not required if you prefer to keep your data anonymous from ChatGPT.

The integrated ChatGPT on Siri uses the GPT-4o model but comes with a daily message limit. Once the daily limit ends, you can still use the ChatGPT free version. To remove this limit in the advanced (latest model), you need a ChatGPT Plus subscription which costs $19.99/month.

to access this model, but with Siri, you can access it for free, with unlimited requests, while staying anonymous.

Step 3: Using ChatGPT Through Siri

Once enabled, you can use Siri as usual, but now powered by ChatGPT. Simply activate Siri by saying Hey Siri or pressing the side button. You can ask complex questions, such as:

  • “What are some good tips for staying focused while studying?”
  • “Solve 22X + 27 = 33X”
  • “Generate an email requesting three days’ leave due to a migraine.”
  • “Give me a timeline of events in World War II.”

Thanks to the privacy features built-in, Siri will ask for permission to Use ChatGPT. Once granted, it will show you the result in the Siri pop-up.

Siri can also access and read what’s on your screen. For example, you can open an image and ask, “What’s on the image?”, and ChatGPT will provide an answer. While reading an article, select some text and ask Siri, “What does the selected text mean in this article?”. The results are quite accurate most of the time.

If you don’t want Siri to ask permission to use ChatGPT every time, go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT and disable Confirm ChatGPT Requests. Siri will then open ChatGPT without requiring you to tap the Use ChatGPT button. However, when uploading images, screenshots, or documents, it will still ask for permission, regardless of what setting is selected.

If Siri fails to automatically enable ChatGPT for certain prompts, add Ask ChatGPT in the prompt. For example, “Ask ChatGPT what’s the current time?”

Additional ChatGPT Features on iOS

ChatGPT integration is not limited to Siri. You can also use it in:

  • Writing Tools: Writing Tools help you rewrite any text, whether it’s an email, note, or iMessage. You can change the tone, make it concise, or get key points from an article. With ChatGPT integration, you can provide prompts and change the text to any style you need. For example, you can select the text in a document and ask it to “explain it like I’m 9 years old”.
  • Visual Intelligence: iOS 18.2 introduces visual intelligence tools that rely on ChatGPT too. Press and hold the Camera Control button to access Visual Intelligence in the Camera app. Then, point the camera at an object, plant, or item, and ask ChatGPT questions such as “What plant is this?” or “Which model is this bike?”.

Final Thoughts on ChatGPT With Siri

With Apple Intelligence, Siri is both more capable and blazingly fast, as everything is processed on device. We experience a notable difference in the speed at which Siri answers questions. With ChatGPT integration, Siri may surpass all other voice assistants in capabilities.

By default, Siri will show the responses on the screen and you must read them. However, if you want Siri to read aloud the Siri and ChatGPT responses (if you are wearing AirPods for example), go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Siri Responses and enable Prefer Spoken Responses option.
