Apple has finally launched its iPhone 16 series. Earlier rumors suggested the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus would get faster 27W charging, while the Pro models would bring in 40W charging. Unfortunately, there is NO change in wired charging speeds—they’re the same as the iPhone 15 series.
That means the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus can charge to a maximum speed of 20W, while the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max can be charged at 27W max with wired charging.
However, there’s one charging upgrade: the iPhone 16 series now supports faster MagSafe charging at up to 25W, an improvement over the earlier 15W limit. This requires the new MagSafe charger.
You can purchase the new MagSafe charger from the Apple Store for $39 (1-meter cable) or $49 (2-meter cable). Pair it with Apple’s 30W USB-C adaptor, retailing for $39, or a third-party USB PD charger with similar or higher wattage. The complete MagSafe setup will cost around $78 unless you already have a compatible charger.
All iPhone 16 models can charge to 50 percent in 30 minutes when using a 30W or higher adapter paired with this new MagSafe charger. Other wireless charging specs remain the same. The iPhone 16 series supports up to 15W charging using Qi2 and 7.5W using Qi.
As for battery capacities, the iPhone 16 comes with a 3561 mAh battery while the bigger Plus variant gets a 4006 mAh cell. On the other hand, the iPhone 16 Pro has a 3355 mAh battery, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max comes with a 4676 mAh battery.
It’s disappointing that Apple didn’t upgrade wired charging speeds, especially with competitors offering 45W and beyond. This move suggests Apple is pushing users toward MagSafe charging. Who knows, maybe that’ll be the only way to charge your iPhone in the future.
