- New leaks highlight the iPhone 17 Air’s skinny 5.65mm design.
- Most iPhone 17 models, including the Air, are going to feature 12GB of RAM.
- The base model iPhone 17 might stick to 8GB of RAM.

A few days ago, there were leaks about iPhone 17 Air’s specs and design. Now, Fresh leaks are shedding more light on its slimness and hardware. The new images by leaker Sonny Dickson on X showed just how slim it will be compared to other models. But that’s not all – a new report by Ming-Chi Kuo suggests a significant boost in RAM for most of the iPhone 17 lineup, potentially including the Air. Let’s take a closer look at these leaks.
How Thin Is the iPhone 17 Air?
By looking at the mock-up of the iPhone 17 Air, it felt like “half the thickness” of other iPhone 17 models. Measurements of the dummy unit confirmed 5.65mm at its thinnest point, significantly thinner than the approximately 8.75mm of the iPhone 17 Pro Max mock-up. This is a huge difference, even if you compare the 17 Air with the base model iPhone 16 (7.8 mm).
This super-thin iPhone 17 Air might be slimmer than the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge (about 5.84mm). Interestingly, the leaked dimensions of the iPhone 17 Air bring it close to the thickness of an unfolded Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, which measures 5.6mm when open.
The iPhone 17 Air mock-up appears taller than the standard iPhone 17 but slightly smaller than the Pro Max. It will be interesting to see how Apple will manage a good battery life on a phone like this. This could be an innovative release for Apple, similar to how the iPhone 6 became their best-selling and most sold model.
A Massive Upgrade in RAM
Apple’s upcoming iPhone 17 lineup, including the new iPhone 17 Air, might finally catch up to its Android competitors in terms of RAM. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is aiming to equip all iPhone 17 models with 12GB of RAM. That is a notable increase from the 8GB found in previous models like the iPhone 15 Pro.
Historically, Apple has faced criticism for using less RAM than many Android phones. They used to justify this by highlighting the efficient synergy between its hardware and software. The jump to 8GB RAM in the iPhone 15 Pro was seen as Apple was finally aligning with the standard RAM found in budget Android devices, with support for Apple Intelligence.
Potential factors for this upgrade
- Further AI improvements
- Desire to regain iPhone market share
- Need to be more competitive
Kuo suggests that while Apple intends for all iPhone 17 models to feature 12GB of RAM, current supply chain issues could potentially lead to the base iPhone 17 model shipping with 8GB instead (Again, injustice with the base model). Despite this, the entire iPhone 18 series will feature 12GB of RAM next year.
It looks like Apple might be gearing up for a significant upgrade with the iPhone 17 Air. This could be one of the most interesting iPhone releases in recent memory. Stay tuned for further updates, and share your views with us on our X.
