Summary:
- James Gunn has just confirmed the next movie he will direct will continue Superman’s story – now officially being called the Superman Saga.
- He has finished the treatment for the film and will begin production soon.
- Peacemaker Season 2 is the next project premiering after Superman and will lay much of the DCU groundwork.

James Gunn has revealed that the “treatment” for his next DCU project is complete. He has also revealed that the film will continue the story in what is now officially being called the Superman Saga. “The treatment is done, which is a very, very worked-out treatment,” Gunn said. “I’m working on that, and I’m hopefully going into production, not too far away from today.”
The announcement came during the red carpet premiere of Peacemaker Season 2, which debuts on HBO Max on August 21, 2025. It’s unclear when the next project in this so-called Superman Saga will come out, but going by the DCU bossman’s words, it seems like we won’t have to wait too long.
How Peacemaker Season 2 Will Set Up the Larger Vision of DCU
Peacemaker Season 2 takes place exactly one month after the events of Superman. “Superman leads into this show, and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker; it’s incredibly important,” James Gunn said in a conversation with THR.
Gunn previously stated that Peacemaker Season 2 will define what’s canon in the DCU and what’s not. He also teased that the show will have surprise appearances from characters that haven’t appeared in any DCU project yet. Needless to say, Peacemaker Season 2 is the ultimate groundwork for the upcoming DCU.

Is James Gunn Making Superman 2
No, James Gunn is not making a Superman sequel – well, not exactly. It is confirmed that Gunn is actively working on a follow-up to Superman, the story of which is now being termed the Superman Saga. However, the DCU CEO doesn’t want to call it Superman 2.
“What I’m working on is in some way… I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.” Gunn has previously stated. As of writing, Superman has crossed the $300 million milestone at the domestic box office, outperforming Man of Steel, which earned $291 million. This means that a Superman sequel is definitely on the table, with the Superman Saga now officially titled. The question is when?
