JioMeet vs Zoom Meetings vs Google Meet – Best Meeting App?

by Pratik

Reliance recently launched JioMeet, its first video conferencing app. At launch, Jio is offering unlimited meetings, 24-hours maximum meeting duration, and up to 100 participants per meeting. These offerings do seem lucrative when compared to the competing apps like Zoom and Google Meet.

But, before we compare it with these apps, it’s upfront evident that JioMeet has the same UI and features as Zoom. More of, JioMeet is the “Zoom app but in Beta”. Hence, what holds true for Zoom would mostly hold true for JioMeet. With that said, here’s a comparison of all these 3 video conferencing services.

JioMeet vs Zoom Meetings vs Google Meet

1. Platform Support

Google Meet, JioMeet, and Zoom, all cover a wide range of platforms and can be used on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and the web. However, Zoom is the only one with a dedicated app for Linux. Google Meet, on the other, doesn’t have a dedicated app for Windows and macOS, your only option is to use the web app. It does have an Android and iOS app though.

2. Interface

The interface of the Zoom and the Jio Meet app is identical. The New Meeting, Join, Schedule buttons are exactly at the same place. On the other hand, Google Meet has a much simpler interface. The homepage of the web and mobile app has only 2 options – New Meeting and Join Meeting.

3. Security & Privacy

By default, both Zoom and JioMeet have password-protected meetings. Hence, in order to join a meeting, you would require both the meeting ID and the password. This is to ensure that random people from the Internet don’t crash your meeting.

On the other hand, Google Meet has a slightly different approach. By default, you have to admit everyone to the meeting. So, the onus is on the host. Additionally, the participants need to sign-in with their Google account in order to attend a Google Meet conference.

In terms of encryption, all of these apps provide some sort of encryption. Zoom is the only one that has promised end-to-end encryption for all the Zoom meetings in the near future.

4. Free Plan

All the 3 apps let you host meetings with up to 100 participants for free. Jio Meet, however, lets you hold a meeting for a maximum duration of 24 hours. Comparatively, Zoom allows only a maximum duration of 40 minutes (3 or more participants). Whereas, Google Meet has a maximum time limit of 60 mins (post-30th Sept 2020).

5. Features

When it comes to feature, Zoom offers the most. From White Board to Internal Recording to even Safe Driving Mode, Zoom has it all. JioMeet, on the other hand, lacks some serious features such as File Sharing, recording meetings and biggest of all, as of now, it only supports 100 people in a group call.

6. Meeting Moderation

Both Google Meet and JioMeet have limited meeting moderation. The person who initiates the call is a host and the rest of them are participants. These roles cannot be swapped or delegated.

Zoom, on the other hand, allows you to assign the host position to any of the participants. Zoom allows disabling screen-sharing, white screen annotation, mute all for other participants.

Closing Words

In case you are outside India, JioMeet is not available yet. More of, if you cater to a larger audience that amounts to more than 100 participants, Zoom is a favorable option. But having said that, for smaller meetings and a one-off scenario, JioMeet works well. However, it’s still “Zoom in the beta” phase and for more serious work, it’s good to stay away as of now.
