LastPass Alternatives for Android

by Vamsi Krishna

When we talked about what are password manager, we recommend LastPass to beginners. It’s easy to get started and their free version used to provide more functionality than paid alternatives.

However, recently the company has decided to double the prices and then triple (from $1 to $2  and then $3 per month) and some features (like unlimited sharing and emergency access) were removed from the free plan. This, coupled with the security issues LastPass had a few months back, has called for a better alternative.

Update: LastPass received a lot of flake when it was acquired by LogMeIn. Now, LogMeIn is being acquired by Private Equity Firm in an all-cash transaction. What this holds for the users is uncertain but one thing is clear. The buyer will be looking to incentivize their investments. This is another reason why you need to look at potential LastPass alternatives.

Best LastPass Alternatives for Android

1. Keepass2Android

If you are looking for a password manager for Android only, then you might have come across KeePass, a free and open-source application to manage passwords. In fact, KeePass was my first ever password manager. Though the official app is only available for Windows, there are many other unofficial builds and ports for other operating systems and mobile devices.

Keepass2Android is one such app that lets you create and manage all your KeePass passwords.

Features: The app is pretty minimal but has all the basic features like password generator, secure form-filling, cross-device sync using Dropbox and Google Drive, integrated soft keyboard to enter user credentials, support for custom fields, tags, and file attachments, a search function to quickly search for your accounts, etc. That’s a lot of value for free.

However, it lacks modern features such as two-factor authentication and fingerprint unlock. Also, the auto-fill password doesn’t work well for all users.

2. Dashlane

Dashlane is one of the most popular, and best LastPass alternatives, password managers with a simple, minimal, and clean UI. Besides saving all your passwords, Dashlane can generate secure passwords and works on all popular OS and browsers. Along with saving passwords, you can use Dashlane to securely store your credit card information. All your information is encrypted with AES-256 bit encryption.

Features: Apart from generating, saving and sharing passwords safely, you can also create secure notes, view password history, has support for fingerprint unlock, and it is compatible with 2FA apps. The major selling point is the free VPN which would otherwise cost you a lot more. Dashlane is a deal if you use a VPN, which you should anyway.

Price: Free for one device. You can choose between the premium plan and business plan which costs $3.33 per month and $4 per month respectively which includes the ability to share and sync passwords across devices, secure account backup, support for 2FA, VPN, and priority support.

3. 1Password

1Password is very similar to Dashlane and quite popular and loved among users. Just like Dashlane, all your passwords and account information is encrypted with AES-256 bit encryption. The app integrates and auto-fills passwords for all your apps and browsers with just a single tap. You can also sync passwords across all your devices. The best thing about 1Password is its travel mode which lets you remove sensitive data from all your devices when traveling. Helpful in case you lose your device or worse, it’s stolen.

1password

Features: 1Password supports fingerprint unlock, travel mode, ability to share passwords, generate complex and secure passwords, ability to create multiple vaults for different purposes, securely store credit card information, cross-platform compatibility, etc.

Price: The primary plan starts at $2.99 per month billed annually. If you want to, you can choose the family plan that lets you share 1Password with four other family members and costs $4.99 per month. You can add more members for $1 per user per month. Since there is no free version, you need to pay to use 1Password. However, you can try this app for 30-days for free. 1Password is only the second-best LastPass alternative because I like Dashlane more. Otherwise, it would be the best LastPass alternatives.

4. Enpass

Of all the apps, Enpass has the best pricing structure if you are on a budget. You just pay a one-time fee and you are good to go. Enpass stores all your passwords locally and the database is encrypted with SQLCIPHER. So, other than you, no one has access to your passwords even in their encrypted state. As good as it is, the downside of Enpass Android app is that the free version only stores up to 20 passwords.

Features: Enpass is completely free for desktop users, auto-fills passwords in all apps and browsers, support fingerprint unlock, military-grade encryption,  password categorization, preset templates to properly store information, auto-clear clipboard, backup and restore over WiFi, offline storage and access, and password audit.

Price: The free plan lets you store up to 20 items. If you want to store more, you can opt for the premium plan that costs a one-time fee of $9.99. With the premium version, you can store an unlimited number of passwords on your Android device.

6. RoboForm Password Manager

RoboForm is one of the oldest form and password managers but it still is very relevant, active and does what it says pretty well. In fact, it integrates with major browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Dolphin. One of the best things about RoboForm is its Multi-step logins with the “matching logins” feature. That alone makes it a top LastPass alternative. Let me explain. Some websites have a multi-step login where you need to enter details one page and then again on another. This is of course for security purposes and Roboform can handle it easily.

Features: Sync data across all your devices, auto-login to online account when using RoboForm’s embedded browser, autosave new login information, import passwords from all major password managers, password generator, auto-fill web forms, built-in search feature, auto logoff or manual logoff, cross-platform compatibility, etc.

Price: Free for one device. To use and sync it on multiple devices, you can choose between the “Everywhere” and “Family” plans which costs $19.95 per year and $39.99 per year respectively. The family plan lets you share RoboForm with five members including yourself. With the premium version, you can securely back up your account and access your passwords from any device.

7. Bitwarden

Bitwarden is another open-source LastPass alternatives that’s been gaining traction for its amazing set of features and its open-source. The source code can be found on GitHub. Like LastPass, you can use it on all popular OS and browsers. You can use it to generate, save, and share passwords and importing from other password managers is easy. In fact, they also offer command-line tools if you are a nerd and geek at heart.

Another cool feature is the ability to host Bitwarden yourself. That way, you won’t be sharing data with anyone else as you own your own cloud servers. You can use it using Docker.

Price: The free version of Bitwarden offers everything you need including cloud sync and ability to use the uber password manager on multiple devices. You also get 2FA as default. The premium will cost $10/year and offer 1GB encrypted file storage, support for Yubikey or other FIDO compliant devices, health reports, and priority support. The family plan begins at $1/month.

8. Password Safe

A relatively lesser-known password manager, but gaining a lot of following recently for its ease of use and no access to internet policy. Of course, that means there is no way to sync data between devices but it was never meant for that. Password Safe was designed to be used on Android only and offer a safe way to store passwords.

The database is encrypted and you can import/export it easily. Passwords copied to the clipboard will be deleted automatically. Usual features like password generation and autofill are there. Whether it should be on the list of LastPass alternatives, I’ll let you be the judge of that.

Price: The pro version comes with additional features like biometric login, edit custom fields, automatic logout, self-destructions, and more.

9. Google Password Manager

Yes, Google has its own password manager and it works not only on its popular and infamously slow browser but also on Android. Using it makes a lot more sense if you are already using Chrome Password Manager. I don’t think Google servers have ever been hacked or compromised.

Like all password managers, you can also save credit card info, forms, and notes inside Google Smart Lock. It is completely free and without any ads of any kind.

LastPass Alternatives

There are a number of options available if you are looking for a LastPass alternative. Ii will make it easier for you. Bitwarden is the best open-source password manager that’s feature-rich and available on all platforms. You can go the pro plan which is just $10 per year. I would recommend Dashlane for VPN users because its an offer you can’t refuse. The amount you will save on your standalone VPN plan will more than makeup for it. Plus, Dashlane is a stellar product.
