Marvel Delays Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars — New Release Date and Everything We Know So Far

MCU is delaying two of its most anticipated big-budget blockbusters. Marvel Studios officially confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, two major installments in the Multiverse Saga that will most likely shape the future of the franchise, have been delayed. The two movies had initially been slated for summer release slots but are shifting into winter slots, a significant reshuffling in the MCU’s long-term roadmap.

The New Dates for Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars

Variety and other publications indicate Avengers: Doomsday, originally scheduled for May 1, 2026, is now scheduled for release on December 18, 2026. Meanwhile, Avengers: Secret Wars, which was originally scheduled for May 7, 2027, has been pushed back to December 17, 2027. Delays are nothing new in the film industry, but these particular changes have sparked quite a reaction on the internet, ranging from disappointment to cautious optimism.

Why the Delay?

There are several reasons why rescheduling was needed. Arguably, one of the biggest is time, as Doomsday only began production in April 2025. With the shooting going to take at least six months, the original May 2026 release date was leaving very little time for the sheer amount of post-production the effects-heavy films require. Rather than rushing, Marvel appears to be playing safe and adopting a more considered, quality-driven approach.

And then there’s the matter of recent track record. Marvel’s post-pandemic output, particularly Phase 4, received criticism for overloaded release schedules, weak storylines, and questionable CGI. Consequently, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Disney leadership are reported to have decided to step back, giving each project more room to breathe.

The Cast and Cameos We Know So Far

Though Marvel hasn’t formally spoken about the delays, Avengers: Doomsday has already made some waves with a huge live-streamed cast reveal in March 2025. Among the most surprising reveals? Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU, not as Iron Man, but as Doctor Doom, a huge departure from his on-screen role.

Apart from Downey Jr., the upcoming movies will be uniting characters from various Marvel universes, including some of the most famous characters from Fox-era X-Men movies.

These include:

  • Patrick Stewart (Professor X)
  • Ian McKellen (Magneto)
  • James Marsden (Cyclops)
  • Kelsey Grammer (Beast)
  • Rebecca Romijn (Mystique)
  • Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler)

Channing Tatum, who first appeared as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, will also headline Doomsday, introducing his long-speculated take on the character to the mainline MCU timeline.

Then, the newly introduced Fantastic Four from Fantastic Four: First Steps will also be part of the story, with:

  • Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards)
  • Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm)
  • Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm)
  • Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm)

From the Thunderbolts film, fans can look forward to seeing Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Wyatt Russell (U.S. Agent), David Harbour (Red Guardian), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Hannah John-Kamen (Ghost), and Lewis Pullman (The Sentry) all reprising their roles. MCU big guns such as Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), Letitia Wright (Shuri), and Simu Liu (Shang-Chi) have also been rumored to have starring roles.

There is also a credible rumor that Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine and unleash more chaos on the multiverse. Tom Holland will be back as Spider-Man, though Marvel has not yet officially confirmed that he will be back.

How It Affects the MCU Timeline

These delays have caused a ripple effect across the broader Marvel timeline. Perhaps the largest of these is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is still in the works to come out in July 2026. With Avengers: Doomsday now coming out after the new Spider-Man film, there are questions being raised about how this change might affect the continuity of the stories, especially since rumors have been circulating that Brand New Day plays a large role in setting up events for the events to Doomsday.

Several other Marvel movies that had earlier been slated for release in February and November of 2026 have also been quietly removed from Disney’s release calendar. This means that nothing else is added; Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday will be the only Marvel movies to grace theaters in 2026.

With Doomsday now releasing after Spider-Man: Brand New Day instead of before, it suggests the Spider-Man film will likely be more grounded rather than multiversal.

From Kang Dynasty to Doomsday

It’s also worth noting that Avengers: Doomsday was not always going by that title. The film was initially announced as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, with Jonathan Majors returning as Kang the Conqueror. However, after Majors’ conviction in a high-profile court case in 2023, Marvel allegedly dropped the actor and strayed from a Kang-focused plot.

In 2024, the new title, Avengers: Doomsday, was announced, revealing that Doctor Doom would be taking over the role of the main villain. This was a significant rewriting of the film’s story and, by extension, the overall direction of the Multiverse Saga.

Given all those high stakes and the need to reboot the story, it is no wonder that Marvel took longer to restructure everything. These aren’t just any movies, they are meant to be the defining chapters of the Multiverse Saga. Whatever follows, from the X-Men relaunch, Young Avengers, to the Fantastic Four sequels, is likely to take its cue from what unfolds in these two films.

Fan Reactions and Outlook

Fan response has been mixed, but overall, the public understands the reasoning. While many were initially disappointed, especially those who were expecting a standard summer Avengers drop, most would rather wait for a complete product than be given something that’s been rushed out.

All the same, there are understandably anxious fans, concerned that the dates may be moved again if production gets hit with additional delays. With a huge cast and storyline, that’s not entirely out of the question.

Final Thoughts

Delays are rarely exciting, but for Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, they may be exactly what the MCU needs right now. After a bumpy Phase 4 and a more stable, but still rebuilding, Phase 5, Marvel seems to be listening.

Taking their time and giving these films the time they need. There’s a real opportunity to end the Multiverse Saga on a high, just as Avengers: Endgame did for the Infinity Saga. The new release dates could be the long-awaited game-changer for the MCU. Now, it’s just a question of waiting, but if Marvel can pull it off, the wait may be worth it.
