Thor is called the Mightiest Avenger for a reason, and he lives up to that name in Marvel Rivals, too. Thor’s a powerful Vanguard, but he is different from other tanks. Instead of sitting back and protecting teammates, he is all about getting in there and dealing damage. Want to play Thor well? You need to know his kit inside and out. This Marvel Rivals Thor guide will teach you everything you need to learn to master him and dominate matches.

Thor Abilities and Ultimate

Thor’s not your typical tank. He’s a Vanguard who cares more about dealing damage and pushing enemies around than shielding his team. He’s still a tank because he’s got a massive health pool and can take a beating, but he plays way more aggressively.

Ability NameDescription
Mjolnir Bash (LMB)• Strike enemies with Mjolnir.
• Shoots lightning when you’re Awakened.
God of Thunder (Q – Ultimate)• Charge and slam the ground, hurting enemies in range.
Storm Surge (SHIFT)• Spin Mjolnir and dash forward, knocking back enemies.
• Consumes 1 Thorforce.
Lightning Realm (E)• Summon lightning to restore Thorforce based on the number of enemies hit.
Awakening Rune (F)• Consume Thorforce to enter the Awakened state.
• Gain ranged attacks and Bonus Health.
Hammer Throw (RMB)• Throw Mjolnir forward.
• Gain 1 Thorforce upon hitting an enemy.
Thorforce (Passive)• Consume to gain Bonus Health.
• Mjolnir Bash recharges it instantly on hit.
Odinson Reborn• If Hela gets a final hit, she instantly revives Thor or grants him Bonus Health.

How to Play Thor: Combos and Tactics

Think of Thor as a Vanguard who fights like a damage dealer. He’s great at punishing enemies who get too close or wander off alone. In big team fights, he’s a nightmare to deal with. Thor’s core mechanic revolves around Thorforce, which grants bonus health when consumed. Managing this properly is key to staying alive and dealing consistent damage.

Here’s your basic game plan:

  • Jump in with Storm Surge – Use this to dive into fights, whether you’re fighting up front or chasing down their backline players.
  • Regenerate Thorforce – Hit people with basic attacks and try to hit multiple enemies with Storm Surge to build it up fast.
  • Stay alive or chase – When things get intense, use Storm Surge again to get out or move around, and grab that bonus health to stay in the fight.
  • Go Awakened when it’s safe – If you’ve got healers backing you up or you’re sure you won’t die, activate the Awakening Rune to deal massive damage.

This rotation keeps you in fights longer, messes up enemy teams, and puts constant pressure on them.

Pro tip for your Ultimate: Use Storm Surge to jump up in the air above your targets, then hit your Ultimate while you’re still airborne. This catches enemies completely off guard since they can’t see it coming, making it much harder for enemies to react or dodge, and it often wins fights on the spot.

However, don’t get too cocky. Thor’s biggest strength is also his biggest trap: Overconfidence. Diving deep is effective only if you have proper support, such as Luna Snow or Cloak & Dagger, who can heal from afar. Many Thor players make the mistake of diving too deep, making it impossible for supports to reach them. Being the strongest Avenger doesn’t mean you can 1v5 every fight.

Getting good at Thor is all about managing your Thorforce and knowing when to go in versus when to back off. Diving too deep will get you killed fast, even as the God of Thunder. But if you position yourself smart, use Storm Surge at the right times, and nail your Ultimate timing, Thor becomes a tank that’s both impossible to kill and deadly as hell. Play it right, and enemies will learn to fear the God of Thunder.
