Mojang has officially announced the name for their summer 2025 game drop: Chase the Skies. This major update brings something Minecraft players have been asking for since the game’s early days – flying mounts in the form of happy ghasts that can carry you and up to four friends through the skies.
The announcement came with detailed information about what players can expect when the update launches. Beyond the flying mounts, Chase the Skies includes craftable saddles, simplified lead crafting, enhanced leashing mechanics, and a stunning visual overhaul called Vibrant Visuals for compatible Bedrock Edition devices.
What’s Coming in Chase the Skies
The centerpiece of this update is the happy ghast, a friendly version of the Nether’s floating mob that serves as your aerial transport. Getting one isn’t simple, though. You’ll need to find dried ghasts in the Nether (around fossil structures or through piglin bartering), bring them back to the Overworld, revive them in water to create a ghastling, then feed it snowballs until it grows into a rideable happy ghast.
The update also tackles several long-standing player requests. Saddles are finally craftable using three leather and one iron ingot, and you can remove them with shears. Lead crafting gets simplified to just requiring string, and you can now leash almost anything to anything else.
For multiplayer adventures, there’s a new Player Locator bar that shows where your friends are with colored dots and elevation arrows. Players can crouch to hide from it if they want privacy.
Visual and Audio Upgrades
The biggest visual change comes with Vibrant Visuals – what Mojang calls Minecraft’s biggest official visual refresh ever. Available on compatible Bedrock Edition devices (Xbox, PlayStation, newer Android/iOS devices, and PC with DX12), it adds proper water reflections, realistic shadows, drifting fog, and shimmering waterfalls without changing gameplay mechanics.
The audio experience gets five new tracks by Amos Roddy for various Overworld biomes, plus a new music disc that drops from regular ghasts. These tracks are already available on Spotify for preview.
