Monster mounting is one of the most exciting combat mechanics in Monster Hunter Wilds. When you successfully mount a monster, you’re not just going for a ride but you’re creating valuable opportunities to deal massive damage and help your hunting team. In this article, we will cover everything important about this hunting technique.

How to Mount a Monster in Monster Hunter Wilds

The first thing to understand is that mounting in Monster Hunter doesn’t happen instantly. There’s a hidden mount meter that you’ll need to fill up before you can actually climb aboard your target. Here’s how to make it happen:

  • Get airborne first. You have several options to do this:
    • Jump off a nearby ledge.
    • Jump off from your Seikret.
    • Swing on a Wedge Beetle.
    • Use weapon jumping attacks (SnS or Insect Glaive).
  • Once you’re in the air, draw your weapon and perform a jump attack (triangle button).

You might need to do this several times before successfully mounting, as you’re working to fill that hidden meter. Another hidden aspect to understand is that monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds have a mount resistance meter too. This means that the first mount attempt is easy, but the next attempts will require more effort to succeed.

Note that only large monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds can be mounted. For example, Arkveld can be mounted as it is categorized as a large monster. However, you cannot mount Gajios or Talioth, as they are categorized as small monsters.

How to Mount and Attack a Monster in Monster Hunter Wilds

Once you’ve successfully mounted a monster, you have several attack options, such as:

ActionButton (PS4)
Weapon AttackR1 Button
Light Knife AttackCircle Button (○)
Strong Knife AttackTriangle Button (△)
BraceR2 Button
DismountSquare Button (□)
Change Position/TargetLeft Stick

Light Knife Attacks

These are quick, rapid strikes that don’t deal huge damage but can be performed frequently. They’re great for maintaining your position and slowly working down the monster’s health.

Strong Knife Attacks

These attacks are slower but pack more punch to the monster. More importantly, they can wound monster parts when used repeatedly in the same area. Once you’ve created a wound, you can target it later with Focus Attack mode for excellent damage.

Weapon Attacks

Drawing your main weapon while mounted delivers significant damage but comes with a trade-off – you’ll dismount afterward. Save this for when you’re ready to end your mounting session with a bang.

What to Do After You Mount a Monster?

Once you have successfully mounted a monster, there are several techniques you need to understand to maximize your effectiveness:

Staying Mounted

If you see the vignette get darker around your screen, it means that the monster is trying to throw you off. You have two options:

  • Hold the brace button (R2) to maintain your position.
  • Change your position on the monster using the movement controls.

The second option is better because it not only keeps you mounted but allows you to continue attacking without interruption.

Position Switching

Don’t stay in one spot! You can move around on the monster to target different body parts. This is especially useful for:

  • Creating multiple wound points.
  • Avoiding areas where the monster is trying to shake you off.
  • Targeting specific breakable parts.

Tips for Mounting Monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds

  • You can only mount large monsters, so don’t try it on small creatures.
  • Watch your stamina. If it runs out, you’ll fall off the monster.
  • In group hunts, your team can attack freely while you’re distracting the monster.
  • Use your finisher move after doing enough damage to knock the monster down and give your team a good opening.

Mastering the mounting technique in Monster Hunter Wilds is not just about getting on top of the monster, but it’s about knowing what to do once you are there. Landing a mount at the right moment can actually help you win the hunt. Practice these tips to become a valuable member of your hunting party!
