Mortal Kombat II Delayed to 2026: New Release Date and What to Expect

If you’ve been sitting back eagerly awaiting the brutal return of Earthrealm’s champions, we’ve got bad news for you. Mortal Kombat II has officially been delayed. That means you’ll have to wait an extra seven months to see Johnny Cage, Scorpion, and the rest of the fighters make their bloody comeback on the big screen. Here’s everything we know about Mortal Kombat II getting delayed.

Why Did Mortal Kombat II Get Delayed?

You’re no doubt wondering: Why move Mortal Kombat II when the hype is so high? The record-smashing red band trailer accumulated more than 107 million views in a span of 24 hours and became one of the most-watched of its kind.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. shifted the release date to capitalize on the more lucrative summer box office. October is often a slower month for blockbusters, and 2025 already has notable competition from titles like Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere and Regretting You.

When is Mortal Kombat II Releasing Now?

Originally set for October 24, 2025, Mortal Kombat II will now debut on May 15, 2026. The delay comes as a strategic move from Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema to aim for a higher box office collection.

By moving the date to May of 2026, Mortal Kombat II sidesteps a busy autumn and goes for a big summer opening. With Avengers: Doomsday delayed from May 2026 to December 2026, Mortal Kombat II currently faces no major competition.

This follow-up from directors Simon McQuoid and screenwriter Jeremy Slater picks up where the original 2021 reboot left off in a big way. With the introduction of Karl Urban in the role of Johnny Cage, the stakes are higher than ever.

Earthrealm’s champions take on the dark forces of Shao Kahn in a bloody, no-holds-barred tournament that will decide the fate of humanity. Starring alongside Urban is a star-studded supporting cast that includes Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, Tati Gabrielle, Lewis Tan, Joe Taslim, Hiroyuki Sanada, and many more.

You will also be reunited with favorites like Scorpion and Sub-Zero, along with newcomers such as Quan Chi and Shao Kahn, making this the biggest roster yet.

I get it, when a movie gets delayed so close to release, it makes you wonder if something’s wrong. But early test screenings for Mortal Kombat II have reportedly gone well, with fans “cheering and jumping out of their seats.”

The delay seems less about the film’s quality and more about box office strategy. With the May release slot, Warner Bros. is clearly betting on the sequel to deliver a flawless run at the summer box office.

So yes, you’ll have to wait a little longer. But with that record-breaking trailer and bigger cast, Mortal Kombat II promises to be worth the wait when it finally lands in 2026.
