Netflix's long-awaited anime remake of One Piece, titled The One Piece, is still deep in development. Unfortunately, fans eagerly waiting for a release sometime shortly may have to dial back their expectations.

While updates on the project have been sparse, the production team has confirmed that development is in progress, but at a slower rate. Here’s everything we currently know about the project and why the wait might be longer than expected.

Netflix's Big Announcement and WIT Studio’s Involvement

The initial announcement came at Jump Festa 2024, where Netflix officially announced that it would be producing a complete anime remake of One Piece with WIT Studio at the helm. Known for their stunning work on Attack on Titan (Seasons 1-3), Spy x Family, and Vinland Saga, WIT’s involvement had fans hyped for a visually polished and story-streamlined adaptation.

Instead of replicating Toei Animation's years-long series, The One Piece will retell the story in a seasonal anime format, beginning with the East Blue Saga. The plan is to address long-standing complaints about the original anime's pacing and early animation quality.

The only visual revealed at that time was concept art of a young Monkey D. Luffy on Dawn Island, before he began his journey to become King of the Pirates. Even that teaser, though, was enough to generate massive anticipation.

First Major Update on One Piece Day 2024

On One Piece Day, Aug. 11, 2024, eight months after it was initially announced, fans were finally treated to more information. Masashi Koizuka, known for his work on Attack on Titan, was announced as the director.

He is joined by assistant director Hideaki Abe (Jujutsu Kaisen), series composer Taku Kishimoto (Haikyu!!), and character designers Kyoji Asano (Spy x Family) and Takatoshi Honda (The First Slam Dunk).

Concept art shown at the event featured iconic scenes re-drawn in a style more faithful to the manga. In particular, the art showed Sanji dealing with an unruly Baratie customer in a way far closer to how the manga portrayed him, rather than the toned-down approach used in Toei’s adaptation.

Oda's Vision: Not a Copy-Paste Job

While the remake stayed faithful to the source material's authenticity, Eiichiro Oda made sure that The One Piece shouldn't be a frame-by-frame remake of his manga. Koizuka also confirmed the same in a production video:

“I remember Oda-sensei telling us through his comments, ‘I want you all to express rather than copy and paste the work… It's creating your interpretation and expression instead of recreating a panel from the manga.”

This will give WiT a creative opportunity to reinterpret iconic moments with fresh direction. Although the manga is already well-made in its own way, it won't hurt to give it a touch of modern direction and style.

Slow Progress and Delayed Updates

Since word of the announcement, fans have been eagerly awaiting updates. But production has been frustratingly slow. Lead character designer Kyoji Asano recently posted on Chinese social media site Weibo that he’s actively working on the project. He mentioned he's been working on some "cuts" for the remake, but that production has been slow.

This update promised fans that the remake is being made, but simultaneously underscored that the project is far from completion. WIT Studio dropped no new trailers, teasers, or major production updates except for the announcement during One Piece Day.

No Release Date Announced Yet, But Rumors Are for 2026

As WIT Studio has been juggling multiple high-profile projects, a 2025 release now seems unlikely. Most insiders and fans now expect The One Piece to release in 2026. That timeline aligns with WiT's deliberate, quality-first approach, and fans are willing to wait.

In fact, longtime fans understand that rushing to launch such a large-scale project like this would risk losing its promise. Asano emphasized that WIT doesn’t want to risk its reputation by releasing an incomplete product. One Piece is, after all, a monumental undertaking with over 1,140 manga chapters, and the studio would rather do it justice.

One Piece Day Could Bring New Announcements

Despite the delays, fans still have reason to hope for another major reveal soon. The next One Piece Day is already just around the corner on August 9–10, and it's the next best opportunity for Netflix and WIT Studio to drop new bits, maybe even a release date or teaser.

Fans should be on the lookout for the event for some big announcements. With how quiet the team has been throughout 2025, One Piece Day may provide some much-needed insight into where the project is at.

The irony is not lost on the fans: a remake intended to fix the pacing issues of the original anime is now being delayed for pacing issues of its own. And yet most fans are still on board, choosing a delayed masterpiece over a rushed mess.

Final Thoughts

The One Piece remake is proving to be more than a remake. With an A-list creative team, a focus on quality over speed, and a clear commitment to respecting Oda's vision, the project holds immense promise.

But with production slowing and no release date on the horizon, fans will have to wait a bit longer. As Masashi Koizuka himself put it, “I’m facing this as a long series… I want to continue this forever." And to many fans, it will be worth the wait, as long as the Straw Hat journey is retold better this time around.
