The gaming world just got a massive surprise as Nintendo finally unveiled their highly anticipated next-generation console, the Nintendo Switch 2. In typical Nintendo fashion, the company shadow-dropped the first look with a surprise trailer on its YouTube channel, confirming its arrival in 2025. Let’s break down everything we know about this exciting new gaming console.

The trailer opens with a nod to the original Switch, showing the Joy-Cons sliding off before transitioning to the new console. The Switch 2 immediately catches your eye with its larger screen, sleeker design, and upgraded features. It feels familiar, but Nintendo has clearly listened to what fans have been asking for.

Nintendo Switch 2: Bigger, Better, and Built for the Future

As rumors suggested, the Switch 2 comes with a larger screen, although the exact dimensions are not shared yet. From the trailer, it’s clear that it’s bigger than the Switch OLED. However, this time around, the design includes a built-in tabletop mount, so there’s no need for third-party stands.

Remember all those complaints about Joy-Con drift? That’s being addressed with a completely redesigned stick system. In case you’re unfamiliar, Joy-Con drift is a common issue in Nintendo Switch controllers where the joystick registers movement even when you’re not touching it. This can cause your avatar to move unintentionally or the camera to pan, making the gameplay frustrating. The new stick mechanism aims to resolve this issue. As a fan, we hope it lives up to the promise.

The new Joy-Cons also feature a magnetic attachment system, making them more convenient to attach and remove. They now sport a primarily black color scheme with hints of the iconic blue and orange, a shift from the vibrant hues of the original controllers. The Joy-Cons are slightly larger too so they should be more comfortable to hold. Sharp-eyed viewers also noticed a new button under the home button on the right Joy-Con, but Nintendo hasn’t revealed what it does yet.

The controllers are backward-compatible, meaning you can use them with original Switch games. However, there’s a small catch: some original switch games might not work perfectly. The trailer includes a fine print note stating, “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.

The console remains a hybrid system, just like its predecessor, meaning you can play it handheld or connect it to a TV. The trailer also gives a quick look at the dock, confirming that the Switch 2 will continue to offer both handheld and TV modes for gaming.

Release Date and What’s Next

While Nintendo hasn’t shared a specific release date, the trailer confirms that the Switch 2 will launch in 2025.

Toward the end of the trailer, the company also mentions a Nintendo Direct event is scheduled for April 2, 2025. This event will likely reveal more details about the console, including its price, pre-order dates, and possibly a few exclusive game titles. But we already some leaks around prices and dates as of now.

For now, all the Nintendo Switch 2 leaks, rumors, and official announcements have been promising. It addresses the issues fans had with the original, like Joy Con Drift, and also brings much-needed features like a larger screen and magnetic joycons.
