Day 7 of OpenAI’s 12 Days of OpenAI campaign introduces a useful yet unexpected feature: Projects. This new feature allows you to organize chats into categories like Work, Home, or Hobbies, keeping everything separate and easier to manage. But it’s more than just a way to stay organized—ChatGPT projects also come with some added functionality. Here’s everything you need to know about ChatGPT Projects.
What’s Projects in ChatGPT
Projects in ChatGPT function as folders for organizing your conversations into categories. You can access the Projects option in the sidebar and create one by clicking the Plus icon next to the Projects option, and then giving it a name.
Once you’ve created a project, you can organize your existing chats by clicking the three-dot menu next to a conversation and selecting the Add to Project option. Alternatively, you can simply drag and drop the chat into the project. You can also start a new chat directly within a project.
However, as mentioned, Projects offer more than just organization. You can attach files and set specific instructions for each project, enabling all chats within that project to access the files and follow the defined instructions.

During the livestream, OpenAI demonstrated several use cases. In one demo, when asked to make changes to the website, ChatGPT took the additional information about the project from the uploaded files and made changes inline with the project requirements. In another demo, when asked, “Do I need to replace the water filter in my fridge?” ChatGPT referenced a maintenance log file within the project and noted that the last maintenance was recorded on March 5, so a replacement was necessary.
Of course, everyone’s use cases will vary—not everyone will maintain something like a home maintenance log in ChatGPT. But at least now, you can organize important chats into folders. The ability to upload files and set custom instructions is an added advantage, though similar functionality can also be achieved by using custom GPTs.
Projects Rollout for ChatGPT
Projects are now rolling out to Plus, Pro, and Teams users, who will receive the feature by the end of the day. OpenAI has also confirmed that free users, education, and enterprise accounts will receive the update next year. Interestingly, a feature like Projects is not being made immediately available to enterprise accounts, which typically benefit from such a feature.
