Perplextity Gets Deep Research, but Is It Really Good Compared to ChatGPT and Gemini

Perplexity AI is about research and finding information online. Now this AI search tool is getting a much-needed feature: Deep Research, which is already available on chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini. However, it makes more sense to have it on Perplexity. Here’s everything you need to know about the new Deep Research feature on Perplexity.

What’s Perplexity Deep Research

Now when you search for something, instead of giving a quick answer from a couple of sources, Deep Research gives an in-depth answer collecting information from dozens of sources.

Let’s say you’re researching the latest trends in electric vehicles. Instead of spending hours reading articles and watching videos, you type your question into Perplexity’s Deep Research. It may take a bit longer than a normal search, but it compiles insights from various sources into a detailed report.  It’s like having a professional researcher doing the hard work for you instantly.

Also, it dwells deeper with its searches rather than just searching about the surface-level question. For example, when you ask it for details about a topic like “What should I know before the markets open today”, it fact-checks the information it collected and also dives deeper into specific information it found online. Therefore, you are bound to get more accurate and more in-depth answers in this mode.

How to Use Deep Research on Perplexity

Head over to the Perplexity app or the website, and click on the drawdown in the chat box to select the Deep Research mode.

Now you can start asking any question normally and Perplexity will search multiple sources and compile a report.

And if you want to share it with others, you can now export the results as a PDF or even a Perplexity Page. This feature is now available to even normal Perplexity searches, not just the Deep Research ones.

So, How Does It Compare to ChatGPT’s and Gemini’s Deep Research Feature

Compared to ChatGPT and Gemini, the Deep Research on Perplexity is a bit of a lite version. While Gemini and ChatGPT spend around 30 minutes compiling hundreds of sources and creating a long detailed report, Perplexity just searches a few dozen sources. However, it is very fast compared to Deep Research on other platforms. Perplexity finishes most research tasks in under 3 minutes—and they’re working to make it even faster.

Want to dive deeper with more accuracy, but still prefer to get the result in a few minutes at max, that’s where Perplexity’s Deep Research shines.

Also, it’s available for free —up to 5 queries per day for non-subscribers and 500 queries per day for Pro users. Compare that to ChatGPT’s Deep Research, which costs a hefty $200 per month and is only for Pro subscribers. Meanwhile, Gemini’s deep research feature needs a Gemini Advanced subscription and runs on the older Gemini 1.5 Pro model.

What About Benchmarks

While results are impressive for some questions, sometimes you may prefer a much more in-depth answer similar to Deep Research on ChatGPT and Gemini. However, in our personal experience, we found Perplexity’s and ChatGPT’s Deep Research to be more accurate than Deep Research on Gemini.

On a tough AI test called Humanity’s Last Exam, which has over 3,000 questions from math to literature, Perplexity scored 20.5%, beating models like Gemini Thinking and DeepSeek-R1. However, it still performed less compared to ChatGPT’s Deep Research model, which scored 26.6%.

On factual accuracy test called SimpleQA Perplexity scored 93.9%, whereas OpenAI’s o1-preview model scored just 44.8. OpenAI’s or Gemini Deep Research have not performed in this benchmark.

So, is Perplexity’s Deep Research worth trying? Yes. It’s fast, accurate, and—unlike the competition—affordable. Whether you’re a student, a professional, or just someone who loves deep dives into topics, it’s like having a research expert in your pocket. And best of all, you can try it right now without spending a cent. Just head to perplexity.ai and start exploring.
