Apple released the iOS 14 developer beta at WWDC 2020 and there are a ton of amazing features that increase the functionality of your iPhone. Among those, PIP is one of my favorites which lets you watch a thumbnail-size video play in the corner of your screen while you do other things on your phone. For example, watching Netflix in a small window while texting your friend on WhatsApp. Turns out, PiP also supports YouTube videos in Safari, at least for now. Let’s see how to play YouTube videos in the background, let’s see how.

Play YouTube in Background on iPhone

This PIP mode is introduced with iOS 14 and you’d need that on your iPhone to make it work. There are plenty of in-depth guides on the internet to help you get iOS 14 on the iPhone. Once you have the iOS 14 up and running on your iPhone,  follow the steps.

Step 1:

Open Safari browser and go to youtube.com.

open youtube

Step 2:

Search for a video on the YouTube website and tap to start playing in Safari. As it starts playing, tap the full-screen button on the bottom right of the video player.

go full screen

Step 3:

Now, as you swipe up to go Home, your YouTube video shrinks down and continues to roll in a floating window. To put it in the background, simply swipe the floating window to the side where it’ll dock and minimize, while playing the music plays int he background. There you go, the music still plays in the background. To move it around, simply drag it with your fingertip. Unforntley, it doesn’t support the YouTube playlist.

Final Words

This was a quick way to set up your iPhone to watch YouTube in the background on the iPhone. As YouTube offers it as a feature under YouTube premium, I’m not sure if they would be disabling this workaround in the future. We’d have to wait and see how it all turns out. In any case, I’d be updating this article if any new features or information is released. What do you think of this feature, let me know in the comments below?
