Pragmata introduces a world filled with unique combat and adventure. It may feel like a lot is happening at once, and that’s completely on purpose. To help you ease in and get familiar with the game from the start, this Pragmata beginner’s guide covers everything you need to know, including combat, resource management, upgrades, and more.

1. How Combat Works in Pragmata

Before anything else, you need to get the core loop down. Pragmata isn't just a simple shooter. You also need to hack the enemies first. How it works is that you need to first expose the enemy's weak points by hacking. Diana takes care of this. After that, you have to shoot those weak points to destroy them, which is Hugh's speciality.

Hacking doesn't pause the game, though. Enemies are still moving and shooting at you while you're in the hacking screen. So you have to stay aware of what's around you, even when you're focused on the hack. So make sure you are at a safe distance from the enemy when you are hacking.

When you're hacking, you'll see a grid full of nodes. Here's the simple breakdown:

  • Blue nodes — You have to go through as many blue nodes as you can. Passing through more blue nodes increases the hack damage and vulnerable duration.
  • Yellow nodes — These nodes are special. They have powerful effects but limited uses, so don't waste them on easy enemies.

The two yellow nodes you'll use most early on are Confuse (makes enemies attack each other) and Multihack (lets you hack multiple targets at once). Save those for the tougher robots.

2. Resource Tips

Resources in Pragmata matter a lot. If you don't collect enough, you'll fall behind on upgrades and start struggling in combat. Here's how to stay on top of it.

Use Object Scan Often

Object Scan is one of the first abilities you can buy, and it's cheap. Buy it the moment it shows up. It lets you scan the area around you to find hidden upgrade materials and REMs without having to search every corner yourself.

It won't mark everything on your map, but it will point you in the right direction. Way better than wandering around hoping to stumble onto things.

Look for Holographic Walls

Some of the best loot in the game is hidden behind holographic walls, fake walls that look like gray metal. When you walk up close, you'll see a visual shimmer that gives them away. Hit the button prompt, and you're in.

Inside these hidden rooms, you'll usually find Red Chests, upgrade materials, or Read Earth Memories. They're worth going out of your way for.

Do the Training Simulations

Training simulations unlock pretty early, and a lot of players skip them, thinking they're optional. They're not if you want to keep up with upgrades. Completing these gives you:

  • Upgrade Components
  • Pure Lunum
  • Cabin Coins

Search each sector carefully because some training missions are hidden and need to be found before you can unlock them.

3. What to Spend First for Upgrading

At the Firmware Updater inside the Shelter, you can upgrade three main stats:

  1. Suit — Your health and defense.
  2. Primary Unit — Your permanent gun's damage.
  3. Hacking — Diana's hacking damage and speed.

The best approach is to level all three to around level 10. This keeps you balanced for whatever the game throws at you. After that, once you have a lot of resources from training missions and exploration, you can start leaning into whatever playstyle you prefer.

4. Two Abilities Worth Buying Early

Auto-Hacking

This lets Diana handle the hacking for you automatically. This is great when you're overwhelmed and need to focus on dodging and shooting instead.

It uses part of Diana's hacking gauge, so don't spam it, especially if you're saving up for Overdrive Protocol. But having it available as a backup is a lifesaver. Upgrade it when you can. At higher levels, it becomes almost instant.

Object Scan

Worth saying twice. It's cheap. It has no upgrade path. Just buy it immediately and use it constantly.

5. Exploring

Pragmata rewards players who slow down and look around. Every sector has hidden rooms, extra items, and shortcuts if you take the time to find them. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Diana sometimes hints at nearby things, so keep on listening to her. She'll comment on your surroundings and occasionally flag something useful. Also, try to keep on talking to her, since it can also help you complete one of the trophies in the game.
  • Use Escape Hatches to go back to the Shelter anytime you need to heal, refill Repair Cartridges, or swap your build. Just know that enemies respawn when you return.
  • Repair Cartridges take a second to use. If you get hit while healing, the heal gets cancelled. Find cover first.

6. Picking the Right Difficulty

Pragmata starts simple but gets much harder around the halfway point. If you're playing on Standard and it's becoming more frustrating than fun, the game gives you an option when you die to switch to Casual.

There's no punishment for doing this, as it won't lock you out of story content or achievements. The only catch is that you can't switch back to Standard once you make the move. So think about it before you confirm.

Pragmata has a lot of mechanics to understand, but once you get the hang of the hacking-and-shooting rhythm, it starts to feel really good. Stick to these basics in your first few hours, and you'll be in a much stronger position when things start getting harder.
