If you just finished Pragmata and want more of a challenge, Lunatic difficulty is waiting for you. It's the hardest mode in the game, and it does hit different compared to a normal run. But here's the thing: it's actually one of the most rewarding ways to play the game, and so many players have agreed, too. Here is your complete Pragmata Lunatic Difficulty guide, to show you how it actually works, and we also have some tips for the best builds.
How to Unlock Lunatic Difficulty in Pragmata
You cannot jump straight into Lunatic from the start. You need to finish the game at least once on any difficulty first. After that, Lunatic shows up as a selectable option when you start a new game.

You also cannot play Lunatic on a New Game+ save, so it has to be a fresh start. Moreover, you can not lower the difficulty once you pick it, so there is no backing out.

One more thing that you need to know before playing the mode: Lunatic does not unlock the secret ending. That only comes from the Unknown Signal post-game mode, so keep that in mind if you are going for full completion.
How Does Pragmata Lunatic Difficulty Work?
Lunatic mode makes enemies deal significantly more damage and gives them bigger health pools. Regular Walker bots move noticeably faster, meaning you cannot just hang back and pick them off the way you might on Standard. You will also run into more enemy variety earlier in the game.
What Lunatic does not do is change the map, move enemies around, or add new encounters. The layout is the same as your first run. Some players have pointed out that this is a bit of a missed opportunity, since fresh enemy placements would have made the mode feel more inventive. However, the raw difficulty bump is enough to make familiar sectors feel genuinely tense again.
To balance things out, the game gives you a much bigger gear selection right from the Unit Printer at the start. Here is what you get access to early:
| Category | Items Available |
|---|---|
| Attack Units | Shockwave Gun Charge Piercer Photon Laser Homing Missiles Jackhammer Lim Cannon |
| Tactical Units | Stasis Net Riot Blaster Sticky Bombs |
| Defense Units | Decoy Generator Impact Barrier |
| Hacking Nodes | Decode Multihack Confuse Heat |
| Hacking Modes | Offense Strike Hybrid Combust Boost |
| Abilities | Auto-hacking Bot Scan Object Scan Critical Shot Fast Moves EC Thrusters |
| Attachments | Repair Up Thrusters Mod Slot Node Slot Hacking Gauge |
Best Builds for Pragmata Lunatic Difficulty
Here are some of the best builds you can follow for the Lunatic mode:
Build 1: Last Shot Burst Damage
This build revolves around two equipment mods: Last Resort and Economize.
Last Resort boosts your final shot's damage by over 50%. Normally, that last shot breaks your weapon. Economize changes that by giving you a chance to fire again without the weapon disappearing, so you can trigger that boosted shot multiple times in a row. Against bosses, this is devastating.

The weapons that benefit most from this combo are the Shotgun, Charge Piercer, and Photon Laser. Stack these supporting mods on top for extra damage:
| Mod | Effect |
|---|---|
| Close Quarters | +10% damage within 10 meters of an enemy |
| Eagle Eye | +10% damage while jumping |
| Target Weakness | +15% damage to weak spots |
| Cursed | -50% health but +20% damage |
| Cheap Shot | +15% damage from behind |
| Untapped Potential | +10% damage for 15 seconds after the yellow node hacks |
The Last Resort Mod in Pragmata is earned through the Specialist Stamp Club Board. You get it by completing the Red Zone in Sector 03: Terra Dome. If you want to find Economize, it is located in the Red Zone in Sector 04: Lunum Mines.
Build 2: Heat Buildup and Overdrive Control
This is the safest and arguably most powerful build for getting through Lunatic consistently. The whole idea is to spam hacks, build Overdrive constantly, max out enemy heat gauges, and chain executions.

The core of the build is Recursive Learning, which gives you +15% Overdrive buildup every time you hack. The more you hack, the faster your Overdrive charges, and the more often you can use it to shut enemies down.

Pair it with these mods:
| Mod | Effect |
|---|---|
| Recursive Learning | +15% Overdrive hacking gauge per hack |
| Heat Transfer | Fills enemy heat gauges 10% faster |
| Skirmisher | +10% damage to downed or immobilized enemies |
| Collateral Damage | Spreads 30% of execution damage to nearby enemies |
| Target Weakness | +15% damage to weak spots |
| Close Quarters | Increases attack power by +10% when within 1o meters of the enemy |
For weapons, bring Hacking Mines and Sticky Bombs. Sticky Bombs make enemy hack boards smaller, so hacks are quicker, you build Overdrive faster, and stay exposed for less time. Hacking Mines helps control the area and makes tough fights easier.
For hacking nodes, use Exposed and Heat most of the time. Switch to Multihack when fighting groups, and use Defense Down for bosses. Set your hacking mode to Combust so enemy heat builds faster and works well with this setup.
Is Lunatic Mode Worth Playing?
It actually depends on what you want from it. If you are going for the Lunar Supremacy trophy, then yes, you have to play it. If you are a completionist chasing the platinum, Lunatic is one of the boxes you need to check.
Beyond trophies, a lot of players have said Lunatic feels like how the game was meant to be played. On Standard, you can get away with a lot. Lunatic forces you to actually use your full kit, think about your build, and play every room properly. Many players have enjoyed their Lunatic run more than their first playthrough because of that.
Give Lunatic difficulty in Pragmata a proper shot, and you might end up enjoying it more than your first run. For more guides, check out our Pragmata Wiki.
