Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event is scheduled for July 10, while the details of Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 leak. The South Korean tech giant is expected to unveil a range of new devices, including the Galaxy Z Fold 6, Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy Watch 7 series, Galaxy Buds 3 series and the Galaxy Ring.
However, in a recent leak by Evan Blass, it was revealed that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 will feature an IPS LCD panel in the cover display instead of a Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel. This news came as a surprise to many. The leaked images, which have since been removed from X (formerly Twitter), included a complete specs sheet for the Galaxy Z Flip 6, clearly showing the IPS label under the ‘Display Technology (second display).’ Check out the full specs of Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6.

If these rumors prove true, it’s difficult to imagine a phone with a high price tag opting for an IPS panel. Moreover, this would be a significant downgrade from last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 5, which featured OLED technology. Having used both IPS and OLED phones, I can vouch that IPS cannot match OLED in terms of picture quality: OLED displays offer more vibrant colors, deeper blacks, and superior overall contrast. Additionally, an IPS panel tends to cause more battery drain than an AMOLED panel.
Why Would Samsung Choose IPS LCD Over AMOLED?
All of this is just a rumor, and we are not sure how much truth lies in it. We recommend you take this rumor with a grain of salt. However, we do have some theories regarding this rumor:
- Cost Cutting: It’s no secret that IPS LCD panels are generally cheaper than OLED panels. However, there’s already a rumor that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 may see a $100 price increase, so cost-cutting might not be the reason.
- New IPS Technology: Another guess is that Samsung may have developed an IPS panel that is close to an AMOLED panel in terms of picture quality.
- Pre-Buzz: It’s also possible that the leak is not entirely accurate or is part of a strategic move to generate buzz around the Galaxy Z Flip 6 before its launch. The actual device might feature a different configuration upon release.
- Typo: It is very possible that Samsung mistakenly mentioned the IPS panel. As we mentioned earlier, increasing the price by $100 and downgrading the display panel doesn’t make sense.
Whatever the reason, Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event is only a week away, and we will get a clearer picture then. So stay tuned as we will be covering everything around the event.
