While fans were waiting for the release of The Mandalorian season 4 after the heart-stopping conclusion of its third installment, Din Djarin and his little green companion, Grogu, are already preparing for their next adventure, and this time, it’s on the big screen. Disney and Lucasfilm are preparing to return Star Wars to theaters, and headlining this return is none other than The Mandalorian & Grogu, a new theatrical outing directed by Jon Favreau.

If you want to know the future of Grogu and Din Djarin, you’re in the right place, as in this article, we will break down the plot of the movie alongside its release date and where it fits in the Star Wars timeline.

Where does The Mandalorian & Grogu’s Story Fit in the Star Wars Universe

The third season of The Mandalorian concluded with Din Djarin, Grogu, and Bo-Katan commanding a Mandalorian force to defeat Moff Gideon and dismantle his Imperial splinter faction. This helped Bo-Katan reclaim Mandalore and brought hope to its people.

But it wasn’t quite done. After the battle, Din Djarin entered into a partnership with the New Republic to assist them in hunting down and capturing other Imperial Remnant commanders. This placed him and Grogu right in the middle of the conflict teased in Ahsoka Season 1.

With Grand Admiral Thrawn now back in the known galaxy, ready to cause chaos with other Imperial hard-liners, The Mandalorian & Grogu are perfectly placed to bridge the gap between the TV series and the next big-scale Star Wars war.

While certain aspects of the plot are kept hidden from us, there’s a good wager the two will run into old friends, face new enemies, and immediately return to the ongoing conflict against what’s left of the Empire.

The Mandalorian & Grogu will officially release in theaters on May 22, 2026. Favreau’s movie will be the first Star Wars title to hit the big screens since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, which ended the Skywalker Saga with a bang.

Another Star Wars film was originally scheduled to release on December 18, 2026, and while not officially confirmed, it was widely rumored to be the Rey Skywalker movie starring Daisy Ridley. However, Disney decided to drop it from their schedule late in 2024.

That one is reportedly amid a full rewrite with a new writer on board, and rumors suggest Shawn Levy’s as-yet-untitled Star Wars film (which may feature Rey as well) is now on deck, with a 2027 release date in mind.

When Will The Mandalorian & Grogu Movie Trailer Be Released?

The film isn’t even in production, so no footage, teasers, or trailers are here. We might have to wait till a bit later in 2025 for those but follow us as we will be covering everything around it. Disney and Lucasfilm should bring out the first look sometime closer to the release window.

Who’s New to The Mandalorian & Grogu Cast

Pedro Pascal will once again put on the armor of Din Djarin, accompanied by Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder, as the skilled stunt and body doubles who perform most of the helmeted action. Grogu, naturally, remains a puppet and not a fully CGI character, so no actor is required unless the fan favorite character ever decides to talk.

Other than Pascal, several other big-name stars have already been announced. Sci-fi icon Sigourney Weaver, famous for Alien, is among the newcomers in an unspecified capacity.

Jeremy Allen White, who just completed his highly praised stint in The Bear, will be playing Rotta the Hutt. Steve Blum, the original Zeb Orrelios voice in Star Wars Rebels, came back recently as well, and Jonny Coyne will be reprising his role as an Imperial warlord who originally appeared in season 3. That being said, many familiar faces may appear, even if their appearances have not yet been announced.

Behind the Scenes: The Crew That Works on The Mandalorian & Grogu

Jon Favreau not only directs The Mandalorian & Grogu but also does the screenplay with long-time collaborator Dave Filoni. Favreau, Filoni, alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, Ian Bryce, and Karen Gilchrist, will produce this film, keeping it closer to the plot in the series.

Production design is in the capable hands of Star Wars veterans Doug Chiang and Andrew L. Jones, who helped create the modern Star Wars aesthetic in The Mandalorian and Ahsoka. Costume design is in the capable hands of Mary Zophres, an industry stalwart on such films as Fly Me to the Moon and numerous other award-winning pictures.

One question still lingering in the minds of fans is if composer Ludwig Göransson, who was responsible for the classic music of the first two seasons of The Mandalorian, will come back for the film. Joseph Shirley scored season 3, so we’ll just have to wait and see who does the score for this next big-screen venture.

While other details remain under wraps, one thing’s clear: the galaxy far, far away isn’t done with these two just yet. As May 2026 inches closer, expect more updates, trailers, and surprises as The Mandalorian & Grogu prepares to take its place in Star Wars history.
