Do you wake up to notifications about being randomly added to a Instagram Group by strangers? You’re not alone, and it happens to most of us. I have also been added to random groups on Instagram. I would ignore it when such notifications were rare, In the beginning, I would just delete or leave the group. But, I kept getting added to groups very frequently and would wake up to a barrage of notifications from Instagram on my phone. That’s how I rolled my sleeves and figured out a way to stop unknown people from adding me to groups on Instagram. Here’s how I did it.

The steps are simple:

  1. Open the Instagram app, go to your profile page, and tap the hamburger menu icon (3 lines) in the top right corner.
  2. Navigate to Messages and story replies > Message controls.
  3. Under the Group chats section, tap Who can add you to group chats and select the Only People You Follow on Instagram option.

After that, you can enjoy your Instagram scrolling without worrying about being added to a group by some strangers.

Note: People you have messaged in the past can still add you to group chats.

Why Do I Keep Getting Random People Adding Me on Instagram Group?

Here are a few reasons why this might be happening:

  • The number one reason for adding you to random groups is to advertise or promote something, often they are in links form. These are mostly spam accounts or bots created for this purpose. Therefore we would recommend you avoid clicking on such links.
  • Some people add random users to groups to collect data or increase the visibility of the group, a kind of spam or promotional tactic.
  • Sometimes, if you have mutual connections with the person adding you, they might think you would be interested in the group.

Can Anyone Add You to a Group on Instagram Without Your Permission?

By default, any random person can add you to a group as long as they know your username. However, by following the above guide, you can minimize such possibilities. Remember that people whom you have followed or messaged before can still add you to a group without your permission. Unfortunately, deleting that message won’t help.
