James Gunn’s Superman is not just another superhero movie, but also the starting point for the rebooted DC Universe (DCU). We were introduced to Corenswet’s Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, alongside heroes including Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, and Mister Terrific.

The story pits Superman against Luthor’s schemes, while exploring how Clark balances his Kryptonian legacy with his human life.

The HBO Max premiere is also directly tied to DC’s streaming strategy.  With Peacemaker Season 2 rolling out weekly, Gunn wanted Superman available so we could see how both stories connect. This move makes the streaming debut more than just convenient; it’s an essential step in shaping the larger DCU.

When Superman lands on HBO Max, it will be more than a typical release. Subscribers will also find an ASL-interpreted version, directed by Leila Hanaumi (director behind Barbie with ASL), to ensure accessibility

HBO Max is also getting a Daily Planet-themed homepage takeover with interactive elements and hidden Easter eggs, including Lex Luthor’s Pocket Prison.

Its success has also guaranteed a follow-up. Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow, scheduled for July 9, 2027, will once again pair Superman and Lex against an even bigger threat.

For now, though, HBO Max subscribers can enjoy the film from home, enhanced by clever touches like the Daily Planet interface and secret Lex references.

Don’t miss Superman when it begins streaming on HBO Max this September 19.
