The Last of Us Season Episode 3 Recap

After the brutal assault on Jackson and the tragic loss of Joel, Episode 3 of The Last of Us presents us with a scene of Tommy sitting beside his brother’s corpse, grieving. Meanwhile, Ellie, with her critically injured rib fractures and collapsed lung, comes to in a hospital. She is tormented by flashbacks of Joel’s death.
Three months pass, and spring sets in. Ellie’s finally cleared by her physician, but to do so, she must go see a therapist, Gail. During the session, Ellie discusses her recent conversation with Joel with Gail. She regrets not having talked to him prior to his death and struggles to forgive him.
After the session, Ellie goes back home to Joel, where she finds some of his personal items, like wooden carvings, a box with his watch, and a gun, clearly left behind by Tommy for her. Ellie is heartbroken as she goes through his closet, which is full of memories of the man she loved.

Dina shows up with cookies as an offering of peace and some information on the attackers. The attackers have Washington Liberation Front (WLF) connections in Seattle.
They offer this to Tommy, who finds himself torn between revenge and safeguarding Jackson. The Jackson Council discusses what they should do, and most of them are worried about the well-being of their town if they send people to Seattle for revenge.

In spite of the Council’s refusal to assist the mission, Ellie is resolute. Dina, observing Ellie’s determination, also decides to accompany her. She makes it seem like she knows someone.

As they leave, Ellie stands for a moment of silence to give a final farewell at his grave. Joel loved his coffee. Ellie never understood why but to honor his soul, she leaves some coffee beans at his grave. Ellie and Dina go to Seattle, where they encounter the Seraphites for the first time, a collection known as the Scars. They are a religious cult, their prophet having passed away a decade earlier, but his influence still guides them.
When they arrive at the edge of Seattle, Ellie and Dina stumble upon the site of a massacre. A peaceful Scars clan, a father and daughter among them, has been slaughtered by the WLF.
Dina is visibly shaken, while Ellie is horrified by what she sees. But they keep moving, further into Seattle, where they get to know the full scale of the WLF’s military strength, which shows that their journey is only just beginning.
Visible Changes in Episode 3 of the Game
The shifts in The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 3 are certainly interesting. The ruined town after the battle with Jackson provides the townspeople with a better rational basis for not wanting revenge, a relief from the game’s tone.
The three-month time lapse, however, doesn’t really cut it. In the game, Tommy and the gang set off immediately to hunt down Joel’s killers, whereas in the series, Ellie and Dina slip away separately, which will alter the story.
Abby hasn’t appeared yet, but Manny gets a cameo. It will be interesting to see whether Abby’s storyline is carried over for later seasons. Improving the Seraphites here is a nice touch, providing some depth. Finally, Ellie’s line of not speaking to Joel on the porch may be setting something up that will develop later in the season.
