When you’re out or traveling, do you feel someone is following you or did you witness something suspicious? Of course, you would want to inform your family discreetly. For iPhone owners, this shortcut is a lifesaver. Here how it works:
- Say “Hey Siri, Emergency SOS”: Siri activates the shortcut.
- Text message is sent: Your location is sent to your pre-selected contact.
- Video starts recording: Your phone’s front-facing camera begins recording.
- Phone goes into silent mode: Activates Do Not Disturb and screen dims.

1. Create the Shortcut
- Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.
- Tap the + button to create a new shortcut.
- Tap Add Action and search for Get Current Location.
- Tap the search bar at the bottom and search for Send Message.
- In the Message field, type Someone is following me. My current location is:.
- Select Current location from the suggestions and trusted contact for Receipts.
- Make sure the toggle next to Show when Run is Off.
- Tap Done.
2. Adjust Phone Settings
- Tap the search bar at the bottom and search for Set Volume.
- Select Set Volume and slide the Ringtone to 0%.
- Tap the search bar at the bottom and search for Set Brightness.
- Select Set Brightness and adjust it to a low level.
- Tap the search bar at the bottom and search for Set Focus.
- Select Set Do Not Disturb and toggle it on.
3. Record and Send Video
- Tap the search bar at the bottom and search for Take Video.
- Select Take Video and choose the front camera.
- Tap the search bar at the bottom and search for Send Message.
- Select Send Message and enter your trusted contact..
- In the Message field, tap the + icon and choose Video.
- Turn off the toggle next to Show when Run.
4. Activate the Siri Shortcut
- Tap the Settings icon (three dots) in the top-right corner.
- Name the shortcut something like Emergency SOS.
- Tap Done to save the shortcut.
- Summon Siri on your iPhone and say the name of your shortcut to run it (e.g., “Emergency SOS“).
Tip: Using Siri Command can be hard in many emergency situations. So, you can put the Siri shortcut to Add to Home Screen.
Few Things to Keep in Mind
- Toggle on Allow Untrusted Shortcuts. This is necessary to run shortcuts if you download it from 3rd party sources.
- Don’t name the shortcut something like I’m Being Followed, Siri will set it to alert emergency service for these keywords.
- The first time you run this shortcut, you’ll need to give it permission to access your contacts and locations.
- If your trusted contact doesn’t have iMessage, you won’t be able to send video. Use third party apps such as WhatsApp.
