Google announced a new Google Gemini feature called Gems at their Google I/O event this year. Google is now rolling out Gems to all users with a Google One AI Premium subscription that comes with Gemini Advanced. Gems are like customized versions of Google Gemini, designed for specific tasks such as writing content, crafting social media posts, teaching a new language, or coding. Think of them like GPTs in ChatGPT. Let’s dig deep.
What are Gems in Google Gemini
You need to provide all the necessary prompt details every time you start a conversation with Google Gemini. However, if there are tasks you perform regularly, you can create a Gem by providing all the required instructions once. Now there is no need to repeat all the instructions every time you redo that task again — the Gem is trained and instructed to handle that task exactly the way you want. Gemini comes with 5 Gems preinstalled and created ready to go.
Let’s say you use Google Gemini for coding tasks. For example, find errors, identify efficient algorithms, refactor code with better variable names, deal with specific details of your project, like tools, target audience, and the structure and plan of your app. Normally, you would need to provide all these details every time to ensure Gemini does the job.
But by creating a custom Gem that understands your specific project, you could simply paste your code, and it would automatically carry out all the necessary tasks instantly. It’s like having a coding partner who already knows the specifics of your project.
You can use this feature in various other ways as well. For instance, you can create a tutor that explains concepts in a way you find easy to understand, a personal assistant that manages your schedule and tasks more efficiently, or a travel guru that plans your trips based on your budget, food preferences, and other needs.
How to Use Gems on Google Gemini
Currently, Gemini comes with five pre-made Gems but you can also create custom Gems by providing specific instructions. As of now, the Gems feature is available only on the web but will come soon to the Gemini mobile apps.
To get started, open the Google Gemini website and click on the Gem Manager option in the left sidebar.
Here, you’ll find some pre-available Gems like Brainstormer, Career Guide, Coding Partner, Learning Coach, and Writing Editor. They are rather self-explanatory.
Click on any of these Gems to start using them. This will open a new chat with that specific Gem, and you can start as many chats as you like with each Gem.
If the default Gem doesn’t meet your preferences, you can create a copy and customize it to your liking. On the Gem Manager page, click the Copy icon to duplicate the Gem.
You can then give your copied Gem a new name, edit the instructions in the pop-up, and click Save to finalize your changes. Gemini has a rewrite option to improve your instructions.
To create a completely new custom Gem from scratch, click the New Gem button on the Gem Manager page, enter instructions, and save. You can also take advantage of the rewrite option to further improve instructions making it more detailed.
All default and custom Gems can be quickly accessed from the sidebar.
Get the Most Out of Google Gemini
This feature is currently available only with the Gemini Advanced subscription that costs $20 per month. It offers other benefits like 2TB Google Drive cloud storage, Gemini on other Google apps and advanced photo editing tools. While the Gems feature alone may not justify the subscription, as you can provide detailed prompts manually without paying, it’s certainly an added advantage for Advanced users.
