What do the Clayface Set Photos Reveal?
You’ve probably seen the leaked set images from Liverpool, where pre-production on Clayface is taking place. These give a glimpse of Gotham City Police Department cars and news vans, which are specially designed for the film.
And here’s the key detail: the GCPD vehicles are noticeably different from the ones in Matt Reeves’ The Batman (2022).
That small but important detail is all it takes to confirm everything Gunn and Safran were saying all along. The Clayface film takes place within the main DCU and not Reeves’ separate Elseworlds continuity. If you were looking forward to seeing Pattinson’s Batman in the DCU, these images are the clearest sign that it’s not going to happen.
Is Clayface Part of Matt Reeves’ Batman Universe?

This is the question fans have asked since the project was announced. At one point, Clayface was rumored to be an Elseworlds film, potentially tying into The Batman. Matt Reeves is indeed attached as a producer, which adds fuel to speculation. But James Gunn shut that down quickly, confirming Clayface is “totally DCU.”
Peter Safran echoed this by saying Reeves’ Batman trilogy and HBO’s Penguin series exist in their own lane. That means Pattinson’s Caped Crusader will only appear in Reeves’ Epic Crime Saga, while the DCU introduces its own Batman in The Brave and the Bold.

Why Can’t Pattinson’s Batman be a Part of the DCU?

That’s where things get complicated. Fans insist that Pattinson’s grounded Dark Knight could very well fit into the larger DCU. After all, Peacemaker was successfully shifted to the new continuity (Peacemaker timelined explained) through clever retcons. But it’s a different story with Batman.
First of all, the DCU’s Batman in The Brave and the Bold already has Damian Wayne filling the role of Robin. That would suggest that it is an older, wiser Bruce Wayne who is experienced with the Bat-Family. Pattinson’s version, however, is still early in his crime-fighting career. That timeline conflict makes it nearly impossible to merge the two.
And then there’s the tone. Though Gunn has said that DCU films will vary in style, Reeves’ The Batman is very realistic, almost noir-like. Placing that interpretation alongside Superman’s Metropolis, cosmic technology, and body-horror villains like Clayface would stretch the logic too far.
What is the Clayface Movie About?

If you’re wondering why Clayface is such a big deal, here’s what we know. Directed by James Watkins (Speak No Evil) and written by Mike Flanagan (The Fall of the House of Usher) with Hossein Amini, the film is described as a horror thriller.
The Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries plays Matt Hagen, a struggling actor who injects himself with an experimental substance to stay relevant, only to transform into a shapeshifting monster.
Naomi Ackie has also joined the cast in a mystery role, and the project is slated for release on September 11, 2026, as part of DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Gunn himself has compared its style to David Cronenberg’s The Fly, promising a grotesque but fascinating take.
Will Batman Appear in Clayface?

This is the big question on every fan’s mind. With Clayface being one of the most recognized Batman villains, most of you would surely expect the Dark Knight to show up. Will Pattinson cameo? Not a chance. The set photos are a confirmation that it isn’t Reeves’ Gotham. But could the DCU Batman perhaps make a dark cameo in this? Possibly.
Gunn has been teasing that Batman’s debut in the DCU isn’t far off, but the big reveal is going to happen in The Brave and the Bold. So while Clayface may tease Gotham’s protector, don’t expect a full reveal of Batman just yet.

Why Does DC Studios Want Two Batmen?

On paper, it does not make sense to keep Pattinson’s Batman and the DCU Batman at the same time. But Safran and Gunn believe it is the perfect way to give the fans the best of both worlds.
Reeves gets to wrap up his crime saga the way he wants. Meanwhile, the DCU builds a more comic-accurate Batman that exists alongside Superman, Supergirl, and the Justice League. The approach mirrors what DC Comics does regularly. Multiple Batman stories, tones, and timelines co-exist. That’s the plan for the movies, too.
So if you’re still speculating that Robert Pattinson’s Batman will ever share the screen with Superman in the DCU, the answer is no, at least for now.
With Clayface carving out the horror-fueled corner of the DCU from Gotham and with Reeves’ saga continuing separately, you get two very different Batmen. And that might not be a bad thing.
