Combat in The Blood of Dawnwalker revolves around directional attacks, blocks, stamina, and timing, while Coen's abilities change depending on whether it's day or night. Here's everything you need to know about the combat system, controls, blocking, dodging, abilities, and fighting as both a human and vampire.

Omniattacks vs. Directional Attacks

The combat system gives you two ways to attack.

Omniattack automatically chooses the direction of Coen's attack. This makes it easier to focus on timing and positioning rather than manually selecting every attack angle.

Directional Attacks give you more control. You can attack from the top, bottom, left, or right, allowing you to target openings in an enemy's guard.

If an enemy protects one side, attack from another direction to make your strike harder to block.

How Blocking Works

You also have two types of blocks.

Omniblock

Omniblock automatically chooses the correct blocking direction against attacks that can be blocked. It's useful when you need a simple defensive option, but it consumes stamina.

Directional Block

Directional blocking requires you to manually match the direction of the incoming attack.

The advantage is that successful Directional Blocks don't consume stamina. On Story, Fair, and Challenging difficulties, an on-screen indicator shows where the attack is coming from, making it easier to learn the system.

Perfect Blocks

Timing matters just as much as direction.

If you block in the correct direction just before an attack lands, you can perform a Perfect Block. This leaves the enemy vulnerable and gives you an opportunity to counterattack.

The block indicator also changes color on supported difficulties to help you recognize the timing window.

When Should You Dodge?

Not every attack can be blocked.

Attacks marked with a red skull icon are unblockable, so don't try to counter them with a block. Instead, use your Dodge to get out of the attack's range.

Learning to recognize this indicator is especially important against stronger enemies, where mistiming a block can quickly leave Coen vulnerable.

Watch Your Stamina

Stamina is one of the most important resources during combat.

Attacking, sprinting, and using Omniblock consume stamina, while the bar gradually refills when you're not using it.

If you completely drain your stamina, Coen becomes Fatigued. His attacks become slower and less effective, making it much harder to maintain pressure.

Because of this, don't constantly attack or rely on Omniblock. Mixing attacks with directional blocks and well-timed dodges lets you preserve stamina for when you actually need it.

Activation Charges and Abilities

Coen's Active Abilities use Activation Charges. These charges can be restored through attacks and successful defensive actions.

Certain skills, gear, consumables, and buffs can also improve how quickly your charges return. Precisely timed defensive actions can restore charges more efficiently, giving you another reason to master blocking instead of simply avoiding every attack.

How to Use Abilities

You can access Coen's abilities through the Ability Wheel or assign them to Quickslots.

Quickslots are particularly useful when you need to activate an ability quickly during a fight without opening the full wheel.

Daytime Combat: Fight as a Human

During the day, Coen fights in his Human Form.

He can use his equipped weapons, Swordmastery, and Witchcraft. Swords are his primary weapon, but other melee weapons such as axes are also available, with different weapons offering different speeds and combat styles.

Use Witchcraft

Witchcraft is exclusive to Coen's Human Form and provides offensive, defensive, and utility abilities.

For example, Ravenous Flock can attack multiple enemies, while Burning Blood deals burning damage over time. Some Witchcraft abilities also consume Coen's Health, so don't use them without considering your remaining health.

Nighttime Combat: Fight as a Vampire

At night, Coen transforms into his Vampire Form and gains access to Vampirism and his vampiric claws.

You can still use your equipped weapons and Swordmastery, so becoming a vampire doesn't force you to abandon conventional combat. Instead, you gain another set of tools to combine with your weapons.

Use Vampiric Abilities

Vampirism gives Coen abilities focused on damage, healing, movement, and crowd control.

For example:

  • Death from Above can be used for surprise attacks.
  • Piercing Shriek can stun enemies.
  • Voracious Bite damages an enemy while restoring Coen's Health.
  • Vampiric abilities can also help Coen reposition during combat.

However, feeding with abilities such as Voracious Bite increases Coen's Corruption, so the strongest option isn't always the safest one.

How to Fight Effectively

The combat system becomes much easier once you stop treating every encounter like a simple attack-and-dodge loop.

Keep these basics in mind:

  • Use Directional Attacks when you spot an opening in an enemy's guard.
  • Use Directional Blocks to defend without constantly draining stamina.
  • Perfect Block attacks when you can read the timing.
  • Dodge red-skull attacks because they're unblockable.
  • Watch your stamina and avoid becoming Fatigued.
  • Use Activation Charges instead of saving every ability for a hypothetical tougher fight.
  • Switch between weapons and abilities to take advantage of Coen's current form.
  • Use Witchcraft during the day and Vampirism at night.
  • Set useful abilities to Quickslots so they're immediately available during hectic fights.

The Key to The Blood of Dawnwalker Combat

The biggest thing to understand is that combat isn't simply about attacking as quickly as possible. Direction and timing matter.

Use directional attacks to exploit openings, directional blocks to conserve stamina, Perfect Blocks to create counterattack opportunities, and dodges when enemies use unblockable attacks. Then, take advantage of Coen's Human and Vampire Forms to bring different abilities into each fight.

Once you learn to manage stamina, Activation Charges, blocking, and Coen's abilities together, combat becomes much more controlled and much more rewarding.
